Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Jeremiah 24:7 God is talking about the Jews who were in exile in Babylon. He says that they will return to the land of Israel and that "They will be ____ and I will be ___". How should this NIV quote be completed?

Answer: My people, their God

In Jeremiah chapter 24 Jeremiah has a vision in which he sees two baskets of figs: one of good quality and one of poor quality. God tells Jeremiah that he (God) sees the exiles who have gone from Judah to Babylon as the good figs. He says that he will watch over them and will bring them back and establish them once again in the land of Israel. In verse 7 he says, "I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart." (NIV)

God then goes on to explain that the bad figs in the vision are a picture of Judah's exiled King Zedekiah, his officials and those who went with them from Jerusalem. The Babylonians had appointed Zedekiah king of Judah after its legitimate king Jehoiachin (Zedekiah's nephew) had been exiled. Zedekiah was an evil king who refused to listen to God's messages to him through Jeremiah and also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, in spite of the fact that he had taken an oath of loyalty to his Babylonian master.

2. What inanimate objects are being addressed in Psalm 24:7 (KJV), and are personified as having "heads" that should be lifted up?

Answer: Gates and doors

"Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in." (KJV)

The gates of the city were originally made in the form of a portcullis, much as the gates of the castles in the feudal ages were. These were not intended to be swung open from side to side like a door today, but instead were to be "lifted up" by weights and pulleys. These could be suddenly let down to prevent an enemy from entering. It would be difficult to close them without possibly allowing the enemy to force their way in if they were made to open as doors are made today.

Thus the "heads" of the gates would be at the top, perhaps even ornately decorated, and the command was that these should be elevated to admit the ark of God to pass through.

Since Christians believe that Jesus is the first-born Son of God, then this "King of Glory" may be considered Jesus Christ Himself.

3. According to 1 Samuel 24:7 a famous man rebuked his men and wouldn't allow them to attack his mortal enemy. What is the name of this righteous man?

Answer: David

David came upon Saul, who was camping out in a cave. He crept close enough to cut off the corner of the King's robe, then felt guilty for having laid his hands upon God's anointed.

4. Exodus 24:7 tells of a man taking the Book of the Covenant and reading it to the people, with the assembled responding "We will do everything the LORD has said; we will obey" (NKJV). Who read the Book of the Covenant to the people?

Answer: Moses

The correct answer is Moses. At this point in time, the Israelites were totally committed to following the LORD and they appeared unstoppable. It wouldn't be long, however, until human nature took over and the Israelite camp was filled with dissent and rebellion. Eight chapters later in Exodus, they would be sacrificing burnt offerings to a golden calf.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible offer this perspective of Exodus 24:7: "The Book of the Covenant was likely the instructions and judgments of (Exodus) 20:22 - 23:33 that had been recorded by Moses. Although the book (more precisely, the scroll) existed in written form, it was read to the people. Written documents were not widely available, and literacy was restricted to a few. Thus the law was communicated orally."

This is the second time in the 24th chapter the people made a solemn oath of obedience to the LORD. A similar commitment was made in verse 3.

5. "Now the sons of that wicked woman _________ had broken into the temple of God and had used even its sacred objects for the Baals." - 2 Chronicles 24:7 (NIV) What was that wicked woman's name?

Answer: Athaliah

Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. When her son Ahaziah was killed, to retain her power as queen mother, she had the whole royal family murdered. Joash, the only one to escape, was only about a year old. He was secretly carried away and hidden in the temple. After six years of her cruel and brutal rule the priests, believing they had the support of the people, brought Joash out of the temple and set him on the throne and had Athaliah killed. Joash was just seven years old when he came to power. He destroyed idol worship and restored worship to the one true God of Israel. He reigned for forty years.

7. "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places." - Matthew 24:7 (NIV) Although Jesus was speaking to his disciples about end times when he said these words, of what did he say these things would be the beginning?

Answer: Birth pains

"All these are the beginning of birth pains." - Matthew 24:8

Jesus described many fearful things concerning end times but this birth seems to indicate that from all these trials, like a woman travailing to give birth, new life is being brought forth.

8. In Deuteronomy 24:7 we learn of the punishment given to anyone caught kidnapping a fellow Israelite. What was the sentence? (NIV)

9. "But the commander, Lysias, came and with the use of much force snatched him from our hands." - Acts 24:7 (NIV) Who is the man that was snatched from their hands in this verse that is omitted from the NIV but can be found in the footnotes at the bottom of the page?

Answer: Paul

In Acts 24, the high priest Ananias and several others took Paul to the Governor Felix to present their charges against him. Tertullus, a lawyer, presented the case and said that Paul was a troublemaker who stirred up riots among Jews everywhere. Tertullus then said that they'd seized Paul but Lysias, the commander, took him from them. Tertullus concluded by saying that if Felix were to question Paul himself, Felix would find that Paul was guilty of these things.

Felix told Paul to speak so he said that he'd gone into Jerusalem to worship, he was clean, had nobody with him and he didn't cause any disturbance. He then said that they couldn't prove him guilty of anything. He then admitted that he was a follower of Christ and believed in the resurrection of the righteous and the wicked. He told the governor that if there was anything they could possibly accuse him of it was that he said that he was only here because of his belief in the resurrection of the dead. Felix then said that he would decide his case when the commander Lysias was there. This can all be found in Acts 24.

10. In Luke 24:7 (NIV), to whom were said the words "The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again"?

Answer: Mary Magdalene and some other women

We learn from Luke 24:10 that the women with Mary Magdalene were Joanna, Mary the mother of James and some other women. The women had been unable to prepare Jesus' body for burial as they wanted to when he was put into the tomb, due to laws concerning the Sabbath. They therefore came very early the next day to carry out what they thought would be their last act of love and service for their Rabbi. There they met with a series of very surprising happenings.

First they found that the huge boulder that had been rolled over the mouth of the tomb had been moved away. Then when they entered the tomb they found that there was no body there! While they were trying to puzzle this out two men "in clothes that gleamed like lightning" appeared. The women fell prostrate to the ground in terror. The men, who are recorded in the Gospel of Matthew as angels, then said the immortal words which are repeated joyfully by Christians around the world on Easter Sunday: "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!" The angels then reminded Mary and the others of how Jesus had explained to them that he would be crucified but that he would rise from the dead after three days. (NIV version of the Bible used for this question.)
