Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth." This is part of the salutation to which New Testament book?

Answer: 2 John

2 John 1:1 says, "The elder, to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth-and not I only, but also all who know the truth."

John was known as the disciple whom Jesus loved. He is credited with being the author of several books in the New Testament: The Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and Revelation.
2. In which book would you find the following words in the first verse? "To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia."

Answer: 1 Peter

"Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia." (1 Peter 1:1)

Peter, also known as Simon, has come a long way. We can see a big change from the rash, quick-tempered disciple who walked with Jesus. Now he is a mature apostle writing to give comfort to those Christians who were being persecuted for their faith.
3. Name the book that starts with this quotation: "In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach."

Answer: Acts of the Apostles

This is the second book written by Luke. He was the author of the Gospel of Luke, to which he gives reference in this introduction in Acts 1:1. This book shows the beginning of the church and how the gospel was spread after Jesus was taken up to heaven.
4. Which letter includes this loving salutation? "To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth."

Answer: 3 John

"The elder, to my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth." (3 John 1:1)

Gaius had been a traveling companion of Paul and in the book of 1 Corinthians it mentions that he was one of the few people Paul had baptized. In third John Gaius is praised because of his hospitality and his faithfulness.
5. "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of God in Corinth, together with all the saints throughout Achaia." Which book was this quote taken from?

Answer: 2 Corinthians

The salutation is found in 2 Corinthians 1:1.

Even though it is not know from where this letter was written, many of Paul's letters were written from jail. The man who once persecuted the church was now persecuted himself. From wherever he was, Paul would hear about what was happening in different churches and so he would send letters with corrections, clarifications and many times with reproofs of what they were doing.
6. In which book would you find these words? "To those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ."

Answer: Jude

"Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, to those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ." (Jude 1:1)

Jude was one of Jesus' half brothers. His name is mentioned also in the gospels of Matthew and Mark. The purpose of this letter is to warn the church of the false doctrines that were being spread.
7. Greetings, greetings, greetings. Which book contains this greeting? "To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations."

Answer: James

"James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations." James 1:1

Chapter four in this letter is an interesting study about the tongue. It speaks about how difficult it is for us to control what we say and how easy it is to hurt someone with our words.
8. Here's another salutation. To which book does it belong? "...To Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier and to the church that meets in your home."

Answer: Philemon

"...To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier and to the church that meets in your home." (Philemon 1:1-2)

Paul wrote this letter on behalf of an escaped slave named Onesimus who was returning to his master after having spent time with Paul. Paul asked Philemon to receive Onesimus not as a slave but as a brother in Christ.
9. Which book would you be reading if you saw the following words? "To those who through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours."

Answer: 2 Peter

"Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours." (2 Peter 1:1)

Peter's reason for writing this letter is to urge the believers to stay strong in what they have believed and not to let false teachers lead them astray.
10. Last but not least: in which book does Paul write these words to Timothy? "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, to Timothy my true son in the faith."

Answer: 1 Timothy

"Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord." (1 Timothy 1: 1-2)

Timothy is first mentioned in Acts of the Apostles chapter 16. Paul took him as his student and trained him for the ministry. In the letters to Timothy, Paul is very encouraging and supportive of this young man and urges him not to let anyone look down on him because of his youth.
