1. Which translation of the Bible do these verses belong to? "And Moshe said unto Hashem, O Adonoi, I am not an ish devarim, neither heretofore, nor since Thou hast spoken unto Thy eved; but I am slow of speech, and of a slow lashon. And Hashem said unto him, Who hath made man's peh (mouth)? Or who maketh dumb, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, Hashem? Now therefore go, and Eh-heh-yeh (I will be) with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. And he said, O Adonoi, send, now, by the yad of him whom Thou wilt send." (Exodus 4: 10-13)

Answer: Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB)

This incredibly easy-to-read for English speakers version of the Bible (I am being sarcastic) is the Orthodox Jewish Bible! :) It's a cool version, though perhaps a bit difficult.

The Complete Jewish Bible option was thrown in to try to confuse ya'll. While the translations are similar, they are different; for example, the OJB uses "Hashem" and "Adonoi," while the CJB uses "Adonai" and "Lord."

The LEB uses "Yahweh" and the KJV uses "LORD."

Edit: I was told in a correction note that the standard for Orthodox Jews in America is the "Stone" Bible. I cannot seem to find that translation online, to quote from. 2. Can you guess which "New" version of Isaiah 7: 14 this is? "So the Lord Himself will give you a special thing to see: A young woman, who has never had a man, will give birth to a son. She will give Him the name Immanuel."

Answer: New Life Version (NLV)

The correct answer is New Life Version (NLV): "So the Lord Himself will give you a special thing to see: A young woman, who has never had a man, will give birth to a son. She will give Him the name Immanuel."

HOWEVER! Look at how similar these other translations are:

NLT: "All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means 'God is with us')."

NASB: "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel."

NKJV: "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."

3. What translation of Luke 1: 41-42 is this? "When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the unborn baby inside her [in her womb] jumped [leaped; kicked], and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Answer: Expanded Bible (EXB)

This is the Expanded Bible. It is called that because it expands [elaborates] definitions/sayings by using [ ] to include words that have similar (though perhaps deeper) meanings to the words already used.

4. What version of Jesus' teaching is this? "Jesus answered, 'I am telling you the truth: no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born again.'" (John 3: 3)

Answer: Good News Translation (GNT)

This is from the Good News Translation (GNT), but note the following translations as well:

CEB: "Jesus answered, 'I assure you, unless someone is born anew, it's not possible to see God's kingdom.'"

AMP: "Jesus answered him, 'I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that unless a person is born again (anew, from above), he cannot ever see (know, be acquainted with, and experience) the kingdom of God.'"

GW: "Jesus replied to Nicodemus, 'I can guarantee this truth: No one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above'."

5. And what version/translation of the Bible are these from? "Standing up, Yeshua said to her, 'Where are they? Has no one condemned you?' She said, 'No one, sir.' Yeshua said, 'Neither do I condemn you. Now go, and don't sin any more.'" (John 8: 10-11)

Answer: Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

Yeshua is a Jewish word for Jesus/Messiah! :)

Jewish people generally do not believe that Jesus Christ is their Messiah...they are Jews, therefore not Christians, and they believe that the Messiah still needs to come to Earth. However, there are "Messianic Jews"; these are people who, although they became Christians, continue to embrace their Jewish culture/roots.

The Complete Jewish Bible uses more English words than the Orthodox Jewish Bible does.

6. These verses are Romans 2: 12-13. Can you guess the translation? "When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed, even though they never had God's written law. And the Jews, who do have God's law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it. For merely listening to the law doesn't make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight."

Answer: New Living Translation (NLT)

Here are the other translations:

CEV: "Those people who don't know about God's Law will still be punished for what they do wrong. And the Law will be used to judge everyone who knows what it says. God accepts those who obey his Law, but not those who simply hear it."

ESVUK: "For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified."

NASB: "For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified."

7. What translation do you think this well-known Genesis verse comes from? "...therefore doth a man leave his father and his mother, and hath cleaved unto his wife, and they have become one flesh." (Genesis 2: 24)

Answer: Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

The answer is Young's Literal Translation. The quotation is from the story of Adam and Eve.

I really recommend you guys use the Bible Gateway website listed to look up these (and more!) Bible translations yourselves. It's fun and fascinating! Of course, I might be a nerd when it comes to certain things, haha.

8. What version of scripture (Leviticus 17: 11) do you think is quoted here? The correct translation is the New Century Version (NCV.)

Compare to the other translations:

NIV: "For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life."

ASV: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh atonement by reason of the life."

RSV: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it for you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life."

Leviticus 17:11 (regardless of version) is a very interesting verse partly because it is echoed in the New Testament. The Old and New Testaments are very much related to each other. Notice how it says that blood is the life and that blood removes the sin. Think about it; what basic topic in Christianity does that remind you of?

9. These sweet verses are taken from a "Standard" Bible. But which one? "So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. FUN SIDE NOTES:
In Numbers 12: 1, we are told that Moses had a "Cushite" wife (some translations say "Ethiopian.") It is believed that Cushite and Ethiopian are synonyms. While this woman is never named, some scholars believe that she was Zipporah, because Zipporah came from the land of Midian, and they feel like Habakkuk 3:7 is saying that Cushite and Midianite are synonyms too ("I see the people of Cushan in distress,
and the nation of Midian trembling in terror." (NLT)

When Moses' siblings, Aaron and Miriam, said mean things about Moses' wife (whoever she was) and insulted him for even marrying her, it made God very angry and He punished them for it. (Numbers 12: 2-10)
Then, in Numbers 31, God commanded Moses and others to kill Midianites--all the Midianites except for female virgins--now that is very weird!
