Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. No sooner had Moses led them out of the desert than the Hebrews began kvetching. They whined that at least in Egypt they had food to eat. What foods did they specifically remember eating?

Answer: meat and cucumbers

They were whining about the manna - it was getting monotonous. In Numbers 11:5, they remember the meat, fish, cucumbers, leeks, melons, onions and garlic they ate in Egypt. God sent the quail to shut them up - they blew in from the sea and landed three feet deep throughout the camp.
2. This prophet starts right out complaining straight to God. "How long?" he asks, "how long shall I cry and you do not hear me?" Which of the minor prophets heard the Lord answer that soon he would send the Babylonians to scourge the nation?

Answer: Habakkuk

Just goes to show that the Lord respects an honest question, so long as you direct it to Him rather than generalized whining.
3. The Psalms are full of whining, again directed to the Lord. The psalmist often complains about being left in a miry pit. Who is purported to have written this verse, from Psalm 30:9 - "What gain is there in my destruction/in my going down into the pit?/Will the dust praise you? /Will it proclaim your faithfulness?

Answer: David

Many of the psalms are ascribed to David, but true authorship cannot be ascertained. All of the listed choices have at least one psalm ascribed to them. I always appreciate David's cheeky way of speaking with the Lord - who knows our hearts, after all, whether we speak it aloud or write it down.
4. Which prophet was so distressed to see that the Lord saved the people of Ninevah that he sat down to sulk on a hill overlooking the city?

Answer: Jonah

This is the same Jonah who ran away from Ninevah in the first place, and thus spent 3 days inside a great fish. Begrudgingly he preached to Ninevah, they repented, and then he went to sulk. The Lord reminded him who was in charge by sending a worm to consume the vine providing him part of his shelter. If Jonah cared so much about a vine, why not about the people of Ninevah?
5. After the episode of whining about her sister, Martha again challenged Jesus when he suggested she roll away the stone from her brother Lazarus' tomb. What was her argument against doing such a thing?

Answer: By now, there will be a bad odor

Martha is famously remembered for whining about her sister Mary's laziness - for some reason, Mary preferred to sit and listen to Jesus than to help with the dishes. In this scene, recounted in John 11, Martha attests that Jesus is the Christ. It is Mary who whines that Lazarus would not have died if Jesus had come sooner. Ever practical Martha is more worried about the stench.
6. Which disciple initially protested that he wouldn't let Jesus wash his feet, but after Jesus explained the symbolism, instead asked to be washed from head to toe?

Answer: Peter

This was before the "last supper," the Passover meal the disciples shared before Jesus was arrested. See John 13 for the passages related to this verbal exchange.
7. Which prophet, when asked by the Lord to carry a message in his name, whined that he was "slow of speech and tongue"?

Answer: Moses

This was after he was addressed from the burning bush, had his staff turn into a snake, and his hand turned leprous and subsequently healed. You think he could figure out that maybe God could help him say the right words? But no, he whined once more, saying "O Lord, please send someone else to do it." That was almost the last straw, but as we know, Moses finally went with the program and the Lord sent his brother Aaron to help him. Exodus 4:1-17.
8. In the parable of the "prodigal son", a young man cashes in his inheritance early and squanders it. When he comes to his senses and goes home, his father kills a fattened calf in his honor. His older brother becomes angry and whines that he never even got a young goat for celebrating with his friends. Which gospel recounts this story?

Answer: Luke

As related in Luke 15:11-31, the wise father explains the lesson - the older son still has his inheritance, and should be glad that those who were lost are now found.
9. Which wicked king of Israel went home and sulked, refusing to eat, because Naboth rebuffed him when the king asked for his vineyard?

Answer: Ahab

Ahab's wife was Jezebel, and she took matters into her own hands after chastising Ahab for sulking - see 1 Kings 21. She managed to set Naboth up so he was stoned to death. Ahab and Jezebel didn't get to enjoy the vineyard for too long - Ahab was killed in battle after trying to set up Jehoshaphat to be killed in his place (1 Kings 22:29-40) and Jezebel was thrown out of a window to be trampled by horses and eaten by dogs (2 Kings 9:30-37).
10. Paul specifically cautions against whining with this verse: "Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation." Which epistle contains this advice?

Answer: Philippians

Philippians is full of good advice - this verse is 2:14-15a.
