Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. WBC

Answer: Count of white blood cells

The CBC will give you a white blood cell count and the differential test will break it down further by looking at different levels of each type of white blood cell. Normal WBC levels are 4,000 to 10,000 cells per mcL.
2. Neutrophils

Answer: First responder white blood cells

Neutrophils fight bacteria and fungal infections. They are a type of white blood cell that is the first to respond. They are often given as a percent of the total white blood cell count and should average between 2.5 to 7.0 k/mcL.
3. RDW

Answer: Red cell distribution width

This score tells your how similar in shape your red blood cells are. If the number is large it's a sign that there is a wide variance in the shape of your different red blood cells. Twelve to fifteen percent difference is a typical reading of the RDW.
4. HcT

Answer: Hematocrit

Hematocrit is a percentage of how much of your blood is made of red blood cells versus white. People who are taking estrogen or testosterone will have different typical test scores. It ranges from 36% to 48% with estrogen supplements to up to 55% if taking testosterone.
5. RBC

Answer: Red blood cells

One drop of blood is roughly 40 mcl. The RBC (red blood count) computes the number of red blood cells found in a typical drop of blood. Women's normal range is 4.0 to 5.4 million cells per mcL and men range from 4.5 to 6.1 million cells per mcL.
6. Basophils

Answer: White blood cells that release histamine

A type of white blood cell, basophils are our body's defense against allergic reactions. When this is triggered, basophils release histamine to protect the body. They will also trigger a release of heparin to prevent the blood from clotting during an episode.
7. MPV

Answer: Average platelet size

MPV stands for mean platelet volume. This is a measure of the average size of a platelet and normal blood scores range from 7.0 fL to 9.0 fL.
8. MCV

Answer: Mean corpuscular volume

How big are your red blood cells? The MCV test score computes this size and 80 to 100 fL (femtoliters) is the normal range.
9. Hb

Answer: Hemoglobin levels

An Hb test should range between 11.5 to 15.5 g/dL for females and 13 to 17 for males. This measure of the amount of hemoglobin in our blood is important because this is an iron-rich protein that carries oxygen around the body and is essential for health.
10. nRBC

Answer: Immature red blood cells

Nucleated red blood cells is the full name of the abbreviation nRBC. These can be listed as a percentage of all red blood cells or as a listed total number. If this number is high, it could be a sign of bone marrow disorders or an infection. A normal test should read less than 10 mcL (0.01 k/mcL).
