Flowery Names Trivia Quiz
Matching Flower to Family
There are many beautiful flowers around the world, and many thousands of different species. But you might be surprised at which ones are more closely related to one another. Can you match these popular flowers to their taxonomic families?
The Amaryllidaceae family contains approximately 1600 species of flower, which are mainly perennial and bulbous. Among the well-known flowers within the family, in addition to daffodils, are amaryllis, snowdrops, spider lilies, crinum lilies, and nerines.
2. Asteraceae
Answer: Sunflower
The very large family Asteraceae has more than 32,000 species of flowering plants (only rivaled by Orchidaceae as the largest family), which are mainly herbaceous plants, and known primarily for their compound flower heads. In fact, the family was originally called 'Compositae' in reference to this fact.
Some common flowers within this family, in addition to sunflowers, are daisies, chrysanthemums, asters, zinnias, marigolds, dandelions, and coneflowers.
3. Caryophyllaceae
Answer: Carnation
Caryophyllaceae is commonly referred to as the pink family, or carnation family, and it comprises more than 2,600 species. Even with species found across the globe (including in the Arctic and Antarctia), the majority can be found in temperate climates.
Some of the more popular flowers within this family (aside from carnations) are sweet William, baby's breath, chickweed, campion, soapwort, and catchfly.
4. Ericaceae
Answer: Rhododendron
Also known as the heath or heather family, Ericaceae is a large (around 4,250 species) family that enjoys acidic soil growing conditions that would otherwise seem infertile. In addition to the named rhodoendrons, other common flowers (or flowering plants) within the family include azaleas (actually a subgenus of rhododendrons), heathers, blueberries, cranberries, mountain laurel, and Indian pipe.
5. Lamiaceae
Answer: Lavender
The Lamiaceae family is commonly called the mint family, and is known for its aromatic properties. In addition to lavender and mint, some other common members of the roughly 7,500 species include sage, thyme, basil, catnip, orgenao, rosemary, and lemon balm.
6. Liliaceae
Answer: Tulip
There are over 600 species within the Liliaceae family, also known as the lily family, with most of them grown from bulbs. They are generally large flowers, and are known for their elegant beauty. Some of the popular ones are true lilies, tulips, daylilies, fritillaries, Asiatic lilies, and Turk's cap lilies.
7. Paeoniaceae
Answer: Peony
Paeoniaceae, or the peony family, is a relatively small family of flowering plants, with only one genus (Paeonia) consisting of around 30 species (there is some debate, with the number of species ranging from 25 to 40). Peonies are appreciated for their large, fragrant blooms, and fare well in temperate regions.
The three main types of peonies are herbaceous peonies, tree peonies, and intersectional peonies (which combine the best traits of the first two).
8. Ranunculaceae
Answer: Buttercup
Also known as the buttercup or crowfoot family, Ranunculaceae is comprised of more than 2,000 species. Diverse, yet celebrated for their beauty, the flowers in this family, beginning with buttercups, include such famous members as anemones, delphiniums, larkspur, monkshood, and meadow rue.
9. Rosaceae
Answer: Rose
The rose family has more than 4,800 species within its 91 genera. And while you might not realize it, the famous rose is part of the same family as apples, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, hawthorns, and cinquefoils! This family is known not only for its beauty and fragrance, but also for the delicious fruit many of the species produce.
10. Rubiaceae
Answer: Gardenia
My personal favourite is the Rubiaceae family, which (in addition to gardenias), includes coffee plants! There are over 14,000 species in this family, and there are definitely some more names to share, if not quite as well-known as some of the others that have appeared in this quiz, such as partridgeberry, quinine tree, ixora, and firebush.
