Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mandible
The mandible is the lower jawbone and is the largest bone in the skull. It connects to the temporal bones of the skull via the temporomandibular joints. The name mandible is derived from the Latin word for chew.
2. Humerus
The humerus is the bone in the upper arm which connects the shoulder to the elbow. At the elbow the ulnar nerve runs in a tight space between the humerus and the skin and it is pain in this nerve that is felt when you hit your funny bone.
3. Patella
The patella is the anatomical name for the knee cap. It is a type of bone called a sesamoid bone which means it is embedded within tendon and muscle.
4. Femur
The femur is the bone in the upper leg and is the longest and strongest bone in the human body. It runs from the hip to the knee. When people are said to have broken their hip it is often the top part of the femur, where it sits in the socket of the pelvis, that has broken rather than the hip bones themselves.
5. Sternum
The sternum is the proper name for the breastbone. The bone sits in the centre of the chest and the ribs are connected to it. The connections to the ribs are formed of cartilage not bone to allow for the ribs to flex as you breathe.
6. Radius
The radius is one of the bones in the forearm and runs from the elbow to the wrist. With the palm facing forwards the radius sits on the outside of the arm while the bone in the inside is called the ulna.
7. Vertebra
A vertebra is one of the 33 bones that make up the spine. These bones are connected with ligaments and separated with squishy pads called discs. The vertebrae are very important as they protect the nerves of the spinal cord from being damaged.
8. Clavicle
The clavicle is also known as the collarbone and sits towards the top of the chest connecting the shoulder blade to the breastbone. The name clavicle comes from a Latin word meaning 'little key' because when the shoulder moves in such a way as to lift the arm up or down the bone rotates a bit like a key does in a lock.
9. Ribs
The ribs are curved bones that sit in the human chest and form a cage that protects vital organs such as the heart and lungs. Most people have 24 ribs with 12 on each side however about 1 in 500 people have an extra rib bone located at the top of the rib cage, this extra bone can form on one or both sides of the rib cage and is called a cervical rib.
10. Tibia
The tibia is the larger bone in the lower leg and is often called the shinbone. The tibia connects the ankle to the knee and sits towards the inside of the leg with the smaller fibula bone sitting towards the outside. The tibia is the second largest bone in the body.
