Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alas, poor Yorick, I used to know the name for the eight collective bones that house the human brain. What is it?

Answer: Cranium

The cranium is the top part of the skull, made of several plate bones that encase the brain. The cranium, also known as the braincase, largely serves to protect the brain, and does not have much movement between the bones.
2. Oh Jolly Roger, what is the scientific name of the movable lower jaw bone that joins the brain-encasing bones of the skull to comprise the entire skull?

Answer: Mandible

The mandible is the lower jaw, and joined with the cranium, they form the skull. The mandible joins the cranium on either side at the temporomandibular joints.
3. Hey Ghost Rider, to complement the lower jaw, what is the formal name of the upper jaw?

Answer: Maxilla

The maxilla forms the upper jaw and is actually a fusion of two bones (as is the mandible). The maxilla goes along the roof of the mouth and inner part of the nose and eye sockets.
4. Riddle me this, Skeletor, the zygomatic bones on the sides of the face are more commonly known as which "attractive" bones?

Answer: Cheekbones

Yes, the zygomatic bones that round out the sides and undersides of the eyes form the cheekbones.
5. Red Skull, if you knocked your forehead on the desk in frustration, which bone would be making contact with the desk?

Answer: Frontal bone

"Front" is another name for "forehead," and the frontal bone is one bone that makes up the top of the eye sockets and nose all the way up to the middle of the top of your head.
6. Skull Knight, do you know the "tearful" name of the inner bone near the eyes?

Answer: Lacrimal bone

"Lacrimal" bones are so-called because they are near the tear ducts, or "lacrimal ducts". These bones are particularly small, and join the frontal bones (forehead) and the maxilla (upper jaw).
7. Alright, Death's-Head, this bone is not technically considered part of the skull, but it is in the tongue and thus part of a dead head - which bone, that doesn't articulate (join) with any other, do I refer to?

Answer: Hyoid

The hyoid bone is a small bone in the tongue, and is the only bone in the body without a single joint connecting it to another bone.
8. Hey Jack Skellington, while not always considered to be part of the skull, the famously tiny bones in the ear are the three smallest in the body. Which bone listed is NOT one of these three small earbones?

Answer: Patella

The patella is the kneecap - that's entirely different! The hammer, anvil, and stirrup are collectively called the "ossicles," or literally, "small bones". Sometimes it's just like it sounds like!
9. Black Mask, why don't skulls, in their post-decomposition bone form, have noses?

Answer: Noses are made of cartilage, not bone

Noses do have structure, but it is made of cartilage, which is more easily decomposed than bone. It does not fossilize, and that is why only the very top part of the nose is defined in a bony skull.
10. Thanatos, the bones of the skull (with the exception of the mandible) don't have mobile joints, but rather which immobile structure?

Answer: Suture

A suture is a jointure of two bones that is entirely or almost entirely immobile. The bones in the skull are the major suture-welded bones of the body.
