Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

What a fantastic season Matt Busby and Manchester United had! In addition to being the first English side to win the European Cup against Benfica, winning 4-1, they finished in second place in the First Division, despite losing their season-ending match against Sunderland.

George Best, who finished the season with 53 goals for the team, was named both the FWA and European Footballer of the Year. They drew 63,500 spectators for a league match against Tottenham Hotspur on January 27, 1968, at home; the same crowd attended the Real Madrid encounter on April 24, 1968.

1967 FA Charity Shield vs. Tottenham Hotpsur ended in a draw at 3-3. Bobby Charlton scored two goals, and Denis Law scored the third for Manchester United. As the game finished as a draw, the shield was on display at both clubs for six months each. The Spurs goals came from Jimmy Robertson and Frank Saul, but goalkeeper Pat Jennings' second goal is what made the game legendary for Tottenham. With the ball in his hand, Jennings kicked it downfield, but Alex Stepney, the United goalkeeper, was not expecting it to bounce in front of him, and as it did, the ball went over his head and into the goal.

That season's squad: Manchester United fielded a roster of 19 players during the season.

Alex Stepney, who started 53 games during the season, was the number one goalie. The second goalie was Jimmy Rimmer. Jimmy participated in just one first-division game throughout the season. Irish full-back Shay Brennan made 17 appearances during the season. Brennan represented the Republic of Ireland on the international scene.

Scottish left-back Francis Burns participated in 49 games during the season. Burns signed with Manchester United in 1965 and left for Southampton in 1972. Tony Dunne was an Irish player who played left-back; he played 49 games in the season. Dunne was also a Republic of Ireland player who represented Ireland 33 times. Frank Kopel was a Scottish left-back player. He only played one full game and one game as a substitute during the season. Between 1966 and 1969, he played a total of ten games for Manchester United before a move to Blackburn Rovers.

Former Scottish football player Pat Crerand was a right-half. Crerand was a former Celtic player who joined Manchester United in 1963 until 1971. In addition, he earned 16 Scottish international caps. John Fitzpatrick, another Scottish football player, played mainly as a wing half-back but has also played as a forward. In the season, he played 18 full games and was a sub three times. Due to an injury, he retired from the game at the young age of 26.

Bill Foulkes, an English center-half, was one of the "Busby Babes" who survived the terrible plane crash in the Munich air disaster in February 1958. Seven teammates died at the scene, and Duncan Edwards died 15 days after the crash due to injuries sustained. In his career, he played 688 games between 1951-1970. Only Ryan Giggs, Bobby Charlton, and Paul Scholes played more games than Bill!

David Sadler played 51 games in the season and played one game as a sub. David scored six goals in the season, including three in the European Cup. Position-wise, David was a central defender but could also play as a midfielder or a forward. He was capped as an England player four times between 1967 and 1970.

Nobby Stiles was an English defensive midfielder. He played 28 games in the season. Nobby spent eleven years at Manchester United and then moved to Middlesbrough between 1971 and 1973. Stiles was an important player in the 1966 World Cup campaign. He was tasked with keeping the Portuguese player Eusébio at bay in the semi-final, which he did, marking him out of the game. John Aston Jr. was an English left-winger (forward). In the season, John scored eleven goals in 43 games, including the FA Cup and European Cup.

My hero as a boy was George Best, a fantastic winger, goalscorer, and nightmare for defenders. Best scored 32 goals' in 53 outings. Best also had an international career for Northern Ireland, where he played 37 games and scored in nine matches. Another one of my heroes was the English player Bobby Charlton. Bobby was a midfielder or forward who was also capable of playing in other positions. He played 53 games in the season and scored 32 goals. Charlton was also a survivor of the Munich air disaster.

Alan Gowling joined Manchester United in 1966 and spent six years at the club. Alan played 71 games for United, scoring 18 times for the club. He played as a forward for the majority of the clubs he played for. David Herd was a Scottish forward who was also capped five times for Scotland, scoring three goals. In the 1967-68 season, he only played in eight games and scored one goal.

Brian Kidd was an English forward who joined Manchester United in 1967. Kidd played in 50 games and scored 17 goals in the process. Kidd moved after seven years at United to Arsenal and appeared in 77 games, scoring 30 goals for the Gunners. Another Scottish legend for United was Denis Law, another one of my heroes. Denis played in 28 games and scored ten goals in the season. In the eleven years he played for Manchester United, he scored an impressive 237 goals in 404 matches. Only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton have scored more goals than Denis at this time of writing.

And finally, we have Jimmy Ryan, the Scottish forward who played as a forward. Jimmy only played in eight games and scored twice in the First Division.
