Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The very first match of the cup saw an unexpected result indeed, with the West Indies victorious over the host team, South Africa. What was the final victory margin in that match?

Answer: 3 runs

A century by Brian Lara saw the West Indies set the home team an imposing 278 for victory. While some spectacular late hitting from Lance Klusener got the South Africans close, they fell just short. Indeed, the over that the home team lost from their batting innings as a penalty for bowling their overs too slowly proved quite crucial.
2. Which bowler was the unlikely taker of the first 5 wicket haul of the tournament?

Answer: Austin Codrington

The Jamaican born, Toronto based fast bowler took an impressive 5-27 against Bangladesh in the 5th match of the tournament. The disappointing Bangladesh team was routed, unable to chase Canada's paltry 180 as they crashed to be all out for 120.
3. Which batsman unexpectedly hit the highest individual score of the tournament?

Answer: Craig Wishart

The Zimbabwean bludgeoned his way to 172 from just 151 balls against the Namibians in Harare.
4. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the cup was to see the largely unheralded Kenyans reach the semi-finals. Which two test playing nations did they defeat along the way?

Answer: Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka

While beating Zimbabwe in the super six stage of the cup was not such a big surprise, no-one had foreseen the result 3 weeks earlier when the Sri Lankans succumbed to an inspired Kenyan performance in Nairobi.
5. Jon Davison's astonishing 111 for Canada against the West Indies came from how many deliveries?

Answer: 76

No-one foresaw the Davison's blazing knock. Sent in to open, he smashed 8 fours and 6 sixes in a devastating display of power hitting. The feat was made all the more amazing by the fact that it followed Canada's horror match against Sri Lanka, when the entire team was bowled out for just 36.
6. West Indian Ramnaresh Sarwan shocked us all when he collapsed on the pitch, having been hit in the head by a vicious bouncer in his team's group match against Sri Lanka. Who was the bowler?

Answer: Dilhara Fernando

As the crowd watched on in dismay, Sarwan was stretchered from the ground and taken to hospital for scans. Later, he surprised the onlookers again as he heroically returned to the ground and batted on. His efforts were in vain as the West Indies went down by a nail-bitingly close margin of six runs.
7. England batted first and were soon rattling away at six and a half runs an over against Australia, in their group match at Port Elizabeth. McGrath and Lee had been smashed everywhere. Which bowler came on to turn the tide for the Aussies?

Answer: Andy Bichel

Bichel took 7-20 from his ten overs, and in doing so restricted England's score to 204, when earlier it looked as if it might stretch as high as 250 or 300. He followed up that effort when he hauled the Australian batting effort out of trouble in an unbeaten partnership of 73 for the ninth wicket with Michael Bevan. England, for whom the match was 'the one that got away', were now out of contention for the cup.
8. The South Africans went into their final group match needing a win against Sri Lanka to progress to the super six stage of the tournament. Alas, all did not go as planned. Which batsmen were in the middle when rain called a premature end to play?

Answer: Mark Boucher & Lance Klusener

The Duckworth-Lewis system came into play as Boucher, who had been told 229 was enough for victory, tamely defended what turned out to be the final ball of the match. In fact, 229 was only enough to tie the game, and the hosts were out of the cup. Just one more run would have seen them go through.
9. Adam Gilchrist of Australia dished up a huge surprise in the first semi final when he was given not out by the umpire but walked off the ground nonetheless. Which Sri Lankan bowler delivered the ball that got him?

Answer: Aravinda de Silva

De Silva and all of his Sri Lankan team-mates went up in appeal when they felt Gilchrist had feathered a catch through to wicket keeper Kumar Sangakarra. Umpire Rudy Koertzen shook his head but Gilchrist, who has since become world-renowned as an honest 'walker' in all forms of cricket, tucked his bat under his arm and headed to the pavilion.
10. The World Cup final, at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, saw the Australians set a phenomenal target for India to chase. What was that target?

Answer: 360

A typically swashbuckling Adam Gilchrist half-century, an unbeaten 140 from Ricky Ponting and a praiseworthy 88 not out from Damien Martyn were the catalysts for the huge Australian total. In reply, batsman-of-the-tournament Sachin Tendulkar was out to Glenn McGrath in the first over, and India struggled to be all out for 234.
