Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which school won the tournament?

Answer: University of Florida

The Gators, under head coach Billy Donovan, plowed through Jackson State, Butler, Purdue, Oregon, UCLA, and finally Ohio State to win their second straight national championship. They'd lose all their starters that offseason and were unranked in the next season's (2008) preseason poll.
2. What city hosted the Final Four?

Answer: Atlanta, Georgia

The Georgia Dome, home to the Atlanta Falcons and the site for the 2002 NCAA tournament, held 71,228 seats. In this tournament, Florida beat UCLA and Ohio State downed Georgetown in the Final Four. The Gators went on to beat the Buckeyes in an exciting, 84-75 game.
3. Upsets were at a low in this tournament, but a few did occur in the first round. Which one of these teams was beaten by a lower seed in the first round?

Answer: Duke

Duke lost to VCU in Buffalo 79-77, in what was one of the tournament's biggest upsets. Tennessee dominated Long Beach State in the first round, Michigan State actually upset 8th-seeded Marquette, and Kentucky edged Villanova.
4. Two teams seeded 16th tied for the lowest margin of defeat against their respective 1st-seeded schools. Which schools lost by the least against the mighty #1's?

Answer: Eastern Kentucky & Central Connecticut State

They lost by the least amount among the four #16 seeds, but they still lost by a considerable amount. The Eastern Kentucky Colonels lost by 21 to the UNC Tar Heels, and the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils also lost by 21, to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
5. Which #2 seed lost in the second round?

Answer: Wisconsin

While Wisconsin went down to UNLV, two of these #2 seeds, UCLA and Georgetown, would eventually make it to the Final Four (but both of them lost in the semi-finals).
6. Less than a month before the infamous Virginia Tech shootings, the men's basketball team was defeated by a mid-major school. While this was no tragedy, their 15-point loss to which school caused disappointment for many fans?

Answer: Southern Illinois

The Salukis blew away the Hokies, winning 63-48. Just days before this, Virginia Tech had beaten another Illinois team-the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois. That game had been much closer; a 54-52 VT victory.
7. Sweet Sixteen: Only one state had three representatives. Which state had three schools make the final sixteen?

Answer: Tennessee

Tennessee, Memphis, and Vanderbilt all made the Sweet Sixteen. However, only Memphis advanced any further and they were slaughtered 92-76 by Ohio State in the Elite Eight.
8. How many mid-major (not from the Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, PAC-10, SEC, or Big East) schools made the tournament by an at-large bid?

Answer: 6

The teams were: Butler, from the Horizon League, Old Dominion, from the Colonial Athletic Association, Nevada of the WAC, BYU of the Mountain West, Xavier of the Atlantic 10, and Southern Illinois of the Missouri Valley Conference.
9. Of all 65 tournament teams only one of them was a first-timer to the tournament. Which school was it?

Answer: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Their first tournament game was almost a huge upset. They started out 10-0 on the #2 seeded Wisconsin Badgers, and at one point had a 25-7 lead. They lost by 13.
10. Which of these Big East schools did make the Big Dance?

Answer: Villanova

Syracuse and Connecticut, perennially top-ranked teams, failed to make the tournament. Syracuse was one of the controversial omissions to the tournament but UConn had had a disappointing season all along. Villanova, the team among these that did make it in, lost 67-58 to Kentucky in the first round.
