Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Commonwealth Games of 2022 were originally due to take place in which South African city?

Answer: Durban

Durban was selected as host city for the games in 2015. However, due to financial difficulties, it was stripped of the hosting rights two years later. Birmingham then outbid fellow English city Liverpool for the rights, and the games were saved.
2. Which existing stadium was upgraded to host the athletics events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies?

Answer: Alexander Stadium

Alexander Stadium, in the northern outskirts of Birmingham, has existed since 1976. A three-year renovation program saw the capacity raised to 32,000 in time for the opening ceremony. The other three options are soccer stadiums belonging to local teams - Aston Villa (Villa Park), Birmingham City (St Andrews) and West Bromwich Albion (The Hawthorns).
3. One of the highlights of the opening ceremony was a ten-metre high mechanical version of what animal, synonymous with the city of Birmingham?

Answer: Bull

Perry the Bull, the mascot for the games, snorted smoke and was a popular attraction throughout the games after he was moved to Centenary Square in the city centre. His name comes from the Perry Barr area where the main stadium is located, whilst the bull bit refers to the Bull Ring market/shopping centre. All medalists at the games received a small cloth version of Perry.
4. Not all the sports took place in Birmingham itself. Which one of these Midlands towns or cities did NOT host any of the events?

Answer: Nottingham

Coventry hosted the rugby sevens, Royal Leamington Spa was the venue for the lawn bowls and Warwick hosted the cycling road race. Other venues included Wolverhampton (cycling time trial), Cannock Chase (mountain biking) and, strangely enough, London (track cycling). Nottingham did not host any events.
5. Which country or territory won their first-ever Commonwealth Games medal when Duken Tutakitoa-Williams took bronze in the men's heavyweight boxing competition?

Answer: Niue

Niue is a self-governing island territory in the Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. It first competed in the Commonwealth Games in 2002, but had never won a medal until Duken Tutakitoa-Williams reached the semi-finals of the heavyweight boxing. He lost to Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali of Samoa but was guaranteed a bronze medal for getting that far.
6. Which island won their first Commonwealth medal in 28 years when Lucy Beere won a silver medal in lawn bowls?

Answer: Guernsey

Lawn bowler Lucy Beere was competing in her fourth Commonwealth Games in 2022. She made it all the way to the final of the women's singles, where she lost to Australia's Ellen Ryan. Her silver medal was the first for Guernsey since 1994, when Adrian Breton won a shooting bronze.
7. Eilish McColgan of Scotland followed in the footsteps of her mother Liz by winning Commonweath gold in which athletics event?

Answer: 10,000 metres

Liz McColgan (nee Lynch) won gold for Scotland in the 10,000 metres on home soil in Edinburgh in 1986, and retained her title in Auckland in 1990. Daughter Eilish kept it in the family by triumphing over the same distance in Birmingham.
8. Cricket returned to the Commonwealth Games for the first time since 1998, with the Twenty20 format being used. Australia won the women's gold medal, but which country won the men's event?

Answer: Nobody - it was a women only event

Only the women took part in the cricket event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Australia defeated India in the gold medal match, with New Zealand claiming bronze. All the matches took place at the Edgbaston test cricket stadium in Birmingham.
Cricket in 1998 (Kuala Lumpur) was a men's tournament over 50 overs.
9. Which country finished the games on top of the medal table?

Answer: Australia

Australia finished on top of the table with 178 medals, including 67 golds. England, Canada and India finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.
10. The 2022 Commonwealth Games ended on August 8th with a spectacular closing ceremony. Which legendary music star brought down the curtain on proceedings with the final act of the night?

Answer: Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne was born and brought up in the West Midlands and has never lost his "Brummie" accent. He took to the stage at the end of the evening with Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi and a couple of the band's touring members to perform their most famous song, "Paranoid".
