Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Michelle-Lee Ahye ([Athletics] Women's 100m)

Answer: Trinidad & Tobago

Michelle-Lee Ahye, who also ran in the fourth-place 4 x 100m relay team, won one of Trinidad & Tobago's two gold medals. The other one went to Jereem Richards in the Men's 200m. In the pool, Dylan Carter took silver in the Men's 50m Butterfly.
2. Elinor Barker ([Track Cycling] Women's 25km Points Race)

Answer: Wales

The Welsh team won a total of 36 medals: 10 gold, 12 silver, 14 bronze. In the Commonwealth Games, the regions that comprise Great Britain compete as individual countries, not as a single unit. Elinor Barker also competed in the Women's 10 km Scratch Race, where she made the finals. Although she also competes in road races, at these games she only raced on the track.
3. Muhamad Aznil Bidin ([Weightlifting] Men's 62kg)

Answer: Malaysia

Muhamad Aznil Bidin was one of seven gold medalists for Malaysia, contributing to their overall total of 24 medals. In this competition, he lifted 126 kg (more than twice his own weight!) in the Snatch, and 162 kg in the Clean & Jerk, for a total of 288 kg.

The runner-up, Morea Baru from Papua New Guinea, lifted a total of 286 kg. While I find these numbers impressive, they are well short of the world record at the time, which was 333 kg, lifted by Chen Lijun in 2015.
4. Stella Chesang ([Athletics] Women's 10,000m)

Answer: Uganda

Uganda's three gold medals all came in distance events: Stella Chesang won the Women's 10,000 m, with compatriots Merciline Chelangat third and Juliet Chekwel seventh; Joshua Kiprui Cheptegi won both the Men's 5,000 m and the Men's 10,000 m. The latter win, in 27:19.62 minutes, set a new Commonwealth Games record.

The Ugandans also earned silver in the Men's Marathon (Munyo Solokon Mutai coming second behind Australian Michael Shelley).
5. Troy Doris ([Athletics] Men's Triple Jump)

Answer: Guyana

This was Guyana's only medal of any color, and it was won with a jump of 16.88 m, a mere 2 cm longer than that of Yordanys Duranona Garcia from Dominica. It was Troy Doris's best jump of the season, but short of his jump at the 2016 Rio Olympics of 16.90 m, which earned him seventh place in that competition.
6. Flora Duffy ([Triathlon] Women's Triathlon)

Answer: Bermuda

Flora Duffy was the only athlete from Bermuda to win a medal. She took 56:50 minutes to swim 750 m, 36 seconds to get on her bike, 29:37 minutes to cycle 20 km, 31 seconds to get into her runners, and 16:56 minutes to run 5 km, finishing in a total time of 56:50 minutes, 43 seconds ahead of second-place Jessica Learmonth, representing England. Flora Duffy also competed for Bermuda in the Mixed Team Relay, in which they finished fifth.
7. Marios Georgiou ([Artistic Gymnastics] Men's Floor Exercises)

Answer: Cyprus

Marios Georgiou also won gold on the Men's Parallel Bars, meaning he won a quarter of his country's gold medals. He also won a bronze medal in the Individual All-Round, while the Men's Team came fourth overall.

Another four gold medals for Cyprus came from Rhythmic Gymnastics, with Diamanto Evripidou winning three individual golds, and contributing to the team's win. Apparently Cypriots are also good shots - they won the Men's and Women's Skeet Shooting events, too.
8. Jonas Jonas ([Boxing] Men's 64 kg)

Answer: Namibia

Along the way to his medal, Jonas defeated boxers from The Bahamas, Samoa, Sri Lanka and England, before facing Canada's Thomas Blumenfeld in the final. The victory was on points, with all five judges awarding the fight to Jonas, and only one of them even giving a single round to his opponent.
9. Rhys McCleneghan ([Artistic Gymnastics] Men's Pommel Horse)

Answer: Northern Ireland

This was Northern Ireland's only gold medal, although they did win seven silver medals and four bronze. With a difficulty score of 6.500 and an execution score of 8.600, McCleneghan's score was 15.100, the same as that of England's Max Whitlock. He won Northern Ireland's first ever medal in artistic gymnastics because of his higher execution score, reversing the two men's placing in the all-round event.
10. Kyron McMaster ([Athletics] Men's 400m Hurdles)

Answer: British Virgin Islands

Despite being 0.01 seconds slower out of the blocks than the man who eventually finished second (Jeffrey Gibson from the Bahamas), Kyron McMaster managed to run a fast and clean race, finishing 0.85 seconds in front. That's a reasonably large margin in this event.

This was the first major international title for the 21 year old, who had been disqualified in a heat in the 2017 World Championships. His was the first gold medal ever won at the Commonwealth Games by a representative of the British Virgin Islands.
11. Amantle Montsho ([Athletics] Women's 400m)

Answer: Botswana

In some African countries, they seem to specialise in long distance running. In Botswana, it's 400 m. Not only did Amantle Montsho win the women's event, but Isaac Makwela won the men's event, and the Batswana team won the men's 4 x 100. The women only managed bronze.

When Amantle Montsho won the 400 m in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, she became her country's first ever Games gold medalist, but it was only start of things!
12. Duncan Scott ([Swimming] Men's 100m Freestyle)

Answer: Scotland

Duncan Scott only won one gold medal, but he had a swag of other medals to take home (and a strange blue koala toy to go with each one): silver in the 200 Individual Medley, and bronze in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Butterfly, 4x100 Freestyle Relay and 4x200 Freestyle Relay. Scotland's 4x100 Medley Relay team, finished fourth.
13. Heena Sidhu ([Shooting] Women's 25m Pistol)

Answer: India

India was actually one of the medal heavyweights, with their total of 26 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze medals leaving them in third place on the final medal table, behind Australia (80, 59, 59) and England (45, 46, 46). Canada had a total of 82 medals, but the table is traditionally ranked by gold wins, then by silver, then bronze, then alphabetical. Canada only won 26 gold medals, so finished in fourth.

Heena Sidhu has a long record of international wins in pistol shooting, including this victory, which was India's first medal of the games. Most of her earlier wins in international competition had been in the 10m air pistol, in which she also took gold on the Gold Coast.
14. Levern Spencer ([Athletics] Women's High Jump)

Answer: Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia's only medal on the Gold Coast came when Levern Spencer cleared a season's best height of 1.95 m, just short of her personal best height of 1.98 m set in 2010. Competing in her fifth Commonwealth Games, she continued the improvement shown in her previous results: 12th in 2002, 5th in 2006, 3rd in 2010 and 2014.
15. Lindon Victor ([Athletics] Men's Decathlon)

Answer: Grenada

In the Men's Dacathlon, competitors seem to be racing, throwing, and jumping against each other, but they are actually competing against a table that awards points for particular scores. The winner may not have won any single one of the ten events, but still have accumulated the most points. Victor Lindon won gold with 8303 points, ahead of Canada's Pierce LePage on 8171 points.

In the final event, the 1500 m, he only had to finish no more than 25 seconds behind LePage to win the medal, and he managed to finish in seventh place, within seven seconds of LePage.
