It was the 1972 Miami Dolphins led by head coach Don Shula. They won a total of 17 games, with the 17th being the Super Bowl win over the Washington Redskins, 14-7. The Dolphins were quarterbacked by Bob Griese and Earl Morrall, and had two 1000-yard running backs in Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris.

It was the first time in NFL history that one team had two 1000-yard rushers in the same season.

Known as "The Long Fellow", Piggott brought home a record nine horses in his career. His first win in the Derby was on Never Say Die in 1954. He also won with Crepello in 1957, St. Paddy in 1960, Sir Ivor in 1968, Nijinsky 1970, Roberto 1972, Empery 1976, The Minstrel in 1977, and his final victory aboard Teenoso in 1983. He retired with 4493 wins in his remarkable career.
