Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mike and Row are in a buzz, having heard about a sport where they fish for flies! However, the duo likely misheard someone who was talking about fly-fishing. With no real flies involved in this sport, what does the term "fly" refer to in fly-fishing?

Answer: An artificial lure made to look like live bait

Artificial flies can be made of a number of synthetic materials, and are often brightly coloured, with the intention of catching the eye of passing fish.

Fly fishing sees the fisherman wade out into water (this can be done in either freshwater or in the sea) before casting the artificial fly. This method is usually employed to catch trout or salmon, but any fish which can be found at the surface of the water is a potential catch. Fly fishing is often divided into two methods, one using dry flies and the other using wet flies. The difference between the two is slight, and aims to present the fly as different types of prey. A dry fly floats and so will appear to a fish as an adult insect, a wet fly will sink and so is more likely to resemble an insect larva.
2. Word travels fast across the pond, and Mike and Row are soon off to Massachusetts in search of a large crustacean. However, they are disappointed to find that a "Boston crab" is not what they believed it to be. Where are you most likely to see a Boston crab?

Answer: In a wrestling ring

The Boston crab is a submission move performed in professional wrestling, and involves bending your opponent's legs above their head, putting pressure on their spine.

While this is usually seen as an unremarkable wrestling move, it has been jazzed up by wrestlers such as Rick Martel and Chris Jericho, giving it a more dramatic effect. Likewise, Ken Shamrock turned the ankle lock into a lethal move and Ric Flair's figure four was almost inescapable.
3. Mike and Row now think that their luck is in, two invertebrates for the price of one. They read something about a floating butterfly and a stinging bee, but soon realise that they are reading the poetic words of Muhammad Ali. Towards which other boxer were these words of Ali originally aimed?

Answer: Sonny Liston

Although said to Foreman in 1974, the famous words, "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee", were actually first used to taunt Liston in the weigh-in before the two met in a fight. This was 10 years before the "Rumble in the Jungle".
4. Having been tipped off that they might find "a cricket" here, Mike and Row set about scouring the grassy field of the Oval. Whilst the duo are unlikely to hear the sound of a chirping insect, which of these are they likely to hear during their time in the Oval?

Answer: The sound of willow on leather

The hard, red cricket ball is made of cork and is bound in leather. The large, paddle-like cricket bat is usually made of willow. The willow from which the bat is made is not easily damaged, as many woods would be from the forceful impact of a fast moving ball (Shoaib Akhtar bowled a ball at 161 kilometres per hour).

The bats are often treated with linseed oil, which offers further protection, as well as giving the batter more control over the ball when contact is made.
5. Row has to drag the arachnophobic Mike into the Crucible Theatre, as he is a bit wary of a creepy crawly he thinks is inside. However, what Mike has heard about is not a creepy crawly, but is an object used to help the players at the Crucible. What sport is played here?

Answer: Snooker

The creepy crawly alluded to in the question is the spider, as this is also an implement used by snooker players to reach balls they may not otherwise reach.

The Crucible, which can be found in Sheffield, is the most important venue in snooker, being the home of the annual World Snooker Championships. These championships have been dominated by the British, but the Aussies were able to wrestle the title out of British hands in 1952 (Horace Lindrum) and 2010 (Neil Robertson). Britain is certainly the home of snooker, with the UK Championships being held as the most prestigious, behind the World Championships. Furthermore, snooker was a British creation, its origins lying in the game of billiards, which was invented by British soldiers stationed in India.
6. Mike and Row are on the west coast of the USA, expecting to meet with a boneless hermaphrodite which plays basketball. However, they soon realise that they are actually meeting a man whose nickname is "the Worm". Whilst not being a hermaphrodite, this man has been known to often dress as a woman. Who is he?

Answer: Dennis Rodman

Though having played for some of the biggest teams in basketball, Dennis Rodman is perhaps more known for his antics off court than he is on it. Rodman made numerous TV appearances and always managed to attract media attention. Along with his TV talk show of the mid/late 1990s, Rodman appeared in UK reality shows "Big Brother" and "Celebrity Love Island".

He is an active animal rights campaigner, having posed naked for PETA under the slogan "Ink Not Mink". The image of a naked/half-naked Rodman by this time was perhaps not as shocking to most, as he had developed a tendency to dress up as a woman when on nights out.
7. Mike and Row are overcome with excitement. They have never seen a swimming butterfly before. However, they have gotten the wrong end of the stick. This butterfly is actually a style of swimming. The butterfly is considered the most difficult swimming style to master.

Answer: True

Though the front crawl is accepted as the fastest swimming stroke, it is not regulated by FINA, the regulating body of aquatic sports. The fastest stroke that is regulated by FINA is, surprisingly, the butterfly.

Accompanying the butterfly is the dolphin kick, a move where the swimmer kicks his legs in unison. This tricky technique was used by Michael Phelps in his record-smashing performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when he won both the 100m and 200m butterfly event. These two wins contributed to an amazing 8 gold medals, with 7 world records to boot.
8. Expecting to arrive at a hive, Mike and Row actually find themselves at the Sun Life Stadium. Being introduced to Bill Barnett, Bob Baumhower, Doug Betters, Glenn Blackwood, Lyle Blackwood, Kim Bokamper, Charles Bowser, and Bob Brudzinski, Mike and Row now realise where the nickname of "Killer B's" came from. In which NFL team did this defensive side play together?

Answer: The Miami Dolphins

The Killer B's, as they came to be known, were hailed as the greatest defensive side in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 2008, Doug Betters and Bob Baumhower became members of the exclusive Dolphin Honor Roll. They were the newest members of this elite group until 2010, when it was announced that Jake Scott and Bill Stanfill, who were actually roommates in college, would be inducted into the roll together.
9. Mike and Row returned to their home country of the UK, and head to the north-west coast of England, hoping to meet a sports team known as "the Shrimps". Instead of meeting a troup of shrimp having a kick about in the sea, they have to go to the Globe Arena in Morecambe to meet the team. Which sport will Mike and Row most likely see this team playing?

Answer: Football

The team gained their name from the famous potted shrimps which the area produces, though many types of seafood are fished on the shores of Morecambe.

Another football team with a similar nickname are Southend United (nicknamed "the Shrimpers"), who also have an eccentric shrimp (Sammy) as their mascot. The mascot of Morecambe is a cat. Barnet FC joins the list of football teams who take their nicknames from invertebrates. This London team are nicknamed "the Bees" on account of their black and yellow home strip.
10. Slightly disappointed that they have not found any sports in which invertebrates compete, Mike and Row approach a boxer whose nickname suggests that his opponents become invertebrates after their bout. He is called "the Bonecrusher". What is this man's real name?

Answer: James Smith

Smith was described by many as an "ordinary" fighter, but managed to win the WBA Heavyweight title in 1986, though he was only able to retain the title for a few months, being defeated by Tyson in early 1987. Smith is noted as being the first-ever WBA Heavyweight champion to have a college degree.
