1. With which club did Ally begin his playing career?

Answer: St Johnstone

Ally joined the Perth club in 1978, at the tender age of 16. He went on to make 57 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals.
2. From which club did Rangers sign Ally?

Answer: Sunderland

After two years at Sunderland, Ally joined Rangers in 1983.
3. Who was the Rangers manager who brought Ally to the club?

Answer: John Greig

John Greig, a prolific Rangers player himself, eventually resigned from the post in October 1983 following poor league form. He was replaced by Jock Wallace, who returned to the club for his second spell as manager.

Ally scored a total 251 league in 512 appearances, although he scored an amazing 355 goals in all competitions for the Ibrox side. In 1999, Rangers fans voted Ally into the greatest ever Rangers team. Those voted for were: Andy Goram, Sandy Jardine, John Greig, Richard Gough, Terry Butcher, Jim Baxter, Davie Cooper, Paul Gascoigne, Ally McCoise, Mark Hately, and Brian Laudrup.

Ally won his first Scotland cap in a friendly against Holland in April 1986. The match was played in Eindhoven, with the final score 0-0.

His last appearance was in a European Champsionship qualifier against Estonia in October 1998. Scotland won the game 3-2, thanks to two goals from Billy Dodds and an an Estonia own goal. Interestingly, Ally was never booked whilst playing for Scotland.

Ally opened his account by scoring both Scotland's goals in their 2-0 friendly win against Hungary in September 1987. His last international goal came in Scotland's 1-0 win against Switzerland at Euro 96. Despite this win, Scotland were pipped to second place by Holland, who had scored two more goals than Scotland.
8. For which club was Ally playing when he announced his retirement from playing?

Answer: Kilmarnock

Ally joined Kilmarnock in 1998. After signing a one-year extension in 2000, he announced that he would hang up his boots at the end of the 2000/01 season. Sadly, much of Ally's later career was plagued with injury. He would later go on to work in TV, most notably as a captain on BBC's Question of Sport, before joining Scotland and later Rangers as a coach under old boss Walter Smith.
9. How many major trophies did Ally win as a player?

Answer: 21

All of Ally's major trophies were won with Rangers, 9 league champsionships, 3 Scottish Cups and 9 League Cups. Perhaps the most notable achievement was equaling Old Firm rivals Celtic's 9 in a row. Rangers also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 1992/93, where they lost to eventual winners, Marseille.
