2. What stadium became Aston Villa's permanent home in 1897?

Answer: Villa Park

Villa Park was constructed in the grounds of Aston Hall. The first game there, in April, 1897, saw Aston Villa defeat Blackburn Rovers 3-0. A record attendance was set in March 1946, when 76,588 people attended a match against Derby County.

Aston Villa defeated local rivals West Bromwich Albion in the F.A. Cup finals of both 1887 and 1895. Other victories came against Everton in 1897, Newcastle United in 1905, Sunderland in 1913, Huddersfield Town in 1920 and Manchester United in 1957. Aston Villa and Arsenal never met each other in an FA Cup final during those 70 years.
4. Since 1888, what two colours have made up Aston Villa's shirts?

Answer: Claret & Sky Blue

6. Who did Villa beat in the inaugural League Cup final in 1961?

Answer: Rotherham United

The very first Football League Cup took place in season 1960-61, and Aston Villa were the inaugural winners. They defeated Huddersfield Town, Preston North End (after a replay), Plymouth Argyle (after two replays), and Wrexham, before seeing off Burnley in a two-legged semi-final, which also needed a third game to settle it.

The final itself was delayed to the start of the following season, and was a two-legged affair. The first game against Rotherham United, at Millmoor, resulted in a 0-2 defeat, but the second leg back in Birmingham saw Villa win 3-0 to lift the trophy.
7. Which player set a record of 561 league appearances for Aston Villa between 1961 and 1976?

Answer: Charlie Aitken

Charlie Aitken, from Edinburgh, signed for Aston Villa as a teenager in 1959. He made his debut at left back against Sheffield Wednesday in April, 1961, and would go on to make 561 league appearances (659 in all competitions) before ending his career with New York Cosmos in 1977.
8. Aston Villa won the European Champions Cup in 1982, defeating which team in the final?

Answer: Bayern Munich

Aston Villa had won their first English championship in over 70 years in 1980-81, to qualify for the following season's European Cup. They defeated Valur of Iceland, Dynamo Berlin of East Germany, Dynamo Kiev of the USSR and Belgium's Anderlecht to reach the final in Rotterdam. Peter Withe scored the only goal of the match to defeat West German giants Bayern Munich.
9. Aston Villa won the League Cup twice in the space of three seasons in the 1990s. Which two teams did they defeat in those Wembley finals?

Answer: Manchester United & Leeds United

In 1994, Villa were underdogs against Alex Ferguson's Manchester United. Dalian Atkinson gave them a 1-0 half-time lead, then Dean Saunders scored Villa's second. A Mark Hughes goal for Manchester United made things interesting, but Saunders grabbed his second, and Villa's third, with an injury time penalty kick to ensure that the trophy would be heading to Birmingham.

In 1996, Villa were back at Wembley, this time against Leeds United, and they won comfortably. Salo Milosevic, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke scored their goals in a 3-0 victory.
10. Aston Villa have had many famous managers over the years, with some of them also serving time as bosses of national teams. Which is the only one of these four Villa managers who did NOT ever manage a national squad?

Answer: Ron Atkinson

Tommy Docherty was Aston Villa manager between 1968 and 1970, and was briefly in charge of Scotland between 1971 and 1972. Martin O'Neill was Villa manager between 2006 and 2010, and would go on to lead the Republic of Ireland between 2013 and 2018.

Alex McLeish was manager of Scotland twice, in 2007 and between 2018 and 2019 , and spent a single season in charge of Aston Villa in 2011-12. Ron Atkinson managed Aston Villa between 1991 and 1994, but never took charge of any national team.
