Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first right-handed pitcher to win a Cy Young award twice?

Answer: Denny McLain

The others were all left-handers and had only one Cy Young award to their credit. McLain's big moments were the 1968 and 1969 seasons with the Detroit Tigers. Denny was the first pitcher since Dizzy Dean in the 1930s to win 30 games, as McLain went 31-6 in 1968. The glory was gone as he was involved in some substance and gambling issues. In 1971, he went 10-22 with the Senators.
2. Which of the following teams were not a member of the National League in the 1880s?

Answer: Kansas City Packers

The Packers were a part of the Federal League in 1914 and 1915 before the league went defunct. The Beaneaters eventually became the Atlanta Braves. The White Stockings, contrary to popular belief, did not evolve into the American League Chicago franchise, but were the eventually named the Cubs.
3. Which of the following died in the middle of a baseball season?

Answer: Ray Chapman

Chapman's head was on the other end of a Carl Mays Yankee pitch in 1920. The Indians went on to win the World Series over Brooklyn.
4. Which of the following sluggers hit .382 in his final season in the Major League baseball?

Answer: Joe Jackson

Fans never got to see what might have been, as Joe Jackson of the Chicago White Sox was banned from baseball after his participation in the Black Sox scandal of 1919.
5. Which of the following hit three World Series home runs in the same series as a rookie?

Answer: Charlie Keller

Keller and the Yankees tore up the Reds in the 1939 series. Charlie hit three home runs, one triple, one double, and seven singles for a .438 batting average. The Yankees won the series, four games to none.
6. Which of the following retired with his home run count tied with Ted Williams?

Answer: Willie McCovey

'Big Mac' spent 19 of his 22 seasons with the Giants of San Francisco. Both Williams and McCovey tied with 521 career home runs. Willie's season high was 45 in 1969.
7. Which Brave won a batting title, then sat out the entire following season with a knee injury?

Answer: Rico Carty

The others never won a batting title. Carty won the title with his .366 average in 1970. After his injury, he was plagued with knee problems and never came back to form. He retired after 15 seasons, with his first seven being with the Braves. He was traded seven times after his injury.
8. Which of the following 1960s Hall of Fame inductees died first?

Answer: Pud Galvin

Galvin pitched for 15 seasons from 1875-1892. He was a lone inductee in 1965. Pud died in 1902. Lloyd Waner, brother of Pirate Paul Waner, died in 1982. The Cardinals' Medwick died in 1975, while Ted Williams died in 2002.
9. In 1949, Ted Williams lost his bid for his fifth American League batting title, losing it by .00016 of a point. Who did he lose it to?

Answer: George Kell

Except for Kell, the others were all National Leaguers while Williams was a career Boston Red Sox outfielder. In 1949, Kell of the Tigers also hit .343 to win the only batting title of his career. Kell finished eighth in the voting for the MVP, while Ted Williams won it.
10. Which of the following teams did not make a World Series appearance in the 1950s?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The others listed made at least two appearances in the decade. The Cubs went to the 1945 series against the Tigers but lost. It would begin a dry spell in appearances that would last throughout the rest of the century.
