MLB Baseball Records Trivia Questions

1. Although the exact hit total has varied over the years, Ty Cobb was the first Major Leaguer to reach 4,000 hits, and he retired in 1928 with nearly 4,200. Who came along in 1985 and dethroned him as the all-time hit king?

From Quiz
Knocking Upon Your Door

Answer: Pete Rose

Depending on the source, Cobb is credited with either 4,189 hits or 4,191; Major League Baseball recognizes Cobb with 4,191 hits. Pete Rose hit a single on September 11, 1985 against the San Diego Padres for his 4,192nd career hit, thus breaking the all-time record. Rose was 44 years old at the time, and played one more season before retiring with 4,256 career hits.

2. Catchers are really not know for speed, but which National League catcher set a record for hitting 13 triples in a season?

From Quiz Do You Know Your Diamonds?

Answer: Tim McCarver

McCarver played in 12 of his 21 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1966 with the Cardinals and wearing the jersey number 15, he banged out 13 three-baggers which helped earn him his first berth of two trips to the All-Star Game. It was the only time in his career that he hit more than seven in a season. The following season he was the runner-up NL MVP to teammate Orlando Cepeda.

3. The great Nolan Ryan threw seven no-hitters in his career. When he threw number five, whose record did he surpass that had four no-hitters?

From Quiz Records All Shuffled

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Even more remarkable, when Nolan threw his fourth no-hitter, it was also his 100th career victory. A no-hitter in every 25 wins? What an average. Koufax threw his no-hitters with the Dodgers in the 1960s, with his fourth being a perfect game against the Cubs in 1965.

4. When this Hall of Fame great retired in 1968, he retired with the most strikeouts of anyone in World Series play. This was probably because he went to 12 World Series in his career. Who was this player?

From Quiz Steeeeriiike Threeeeeeee!

Answer: Mickey Mantle

Mickey went to all 12 World Series with the Yankees from 1951-1964. Mickey struck out nine times in the 1960 series in a loss to the Pirates, eight times in 1953 against the Dodgers, and another eight times against the Cardinals in 1964. Mantle more than made up for that by hitting a record 18 career World Series home runs. He hit a total of 26 extra-base hits in World Series play. The Hall of Fame inducted him easily in 1974.

5. Who hit 73 home runs during the 2001 season?

From Quiz The Records of MLB

Answer: Barry Bonds

Barry Bonds was involved in a scandal over steroids during 2007. He started his career on May 30, 1986 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and his last MLB appearance occurred on September 26, 2007 while playing for the San Francisco Giants. Barry was selected to the All-Star team 14 times, won 8 gold glove awards, 7 NL MVPs, and won the 1996 Home Run Derby. During 2001, he hit 28 home runs in the first 50 games, 17 in May, and 39 home runs by the All-Star break. He drew 177 walks, was on base an average of 51.5%, had a slugging percentage of .863, hit 411 total bases, as well as broke Mark McGwire's 70 home runs in 1998 by hitting 73 home runs that season.

6. This pitcher threw three no-hitters in his career, and set a record for throwing 12 one-hitters. Who is this Hall of Fame great?

From Quiz MLB Records Challenge

Answer: Bob Feller

Feller was a career Cleveland Indian from 1936-1956. Bob was a six-time 20-game winner in his career, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. The great Cy Young also threw three no-hitters. Koufax of the Dodgers threw a no-no four times. Ryan later tied Feller's record of 12 one-hitters, but threw seven no-hitters of his own.
