quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2003, who was the opening day starter?

Answer: Kerry Wood

The Cubs let Kerry Wood start the first game, and they won that game to win the first game of the year against the New York Mets.
2. In 2003, the Cubs hired a new manager. Who was that manager?

Answer: Dusty Baker

The Cubs had a smart game plan going into the 2003 off-season. Due to this wonderful plan, the Cubs were able to land high market manager Dusty Baker.
3. Sammy Sosa had been late to spring training since 1998 due to superstition. Sammy told the Cubs that he would be on time to spring training in 2003 because of the Dusty Baker signing. Was he on time in 2003 to spring training?

Answer: Yes

Sammy was late to spring training in 1998, and that was the year his career exploded into a massive outbreak of home runs. Since then he believed that it was because of the late arrival. He had been late since. He was on time in 2003, and I assume because of the cork bat and other incidents he will be late for the start of the 2004 spring training.
4. In July 2003, Corey Patterson got hurt running to first. What team were the Cubs playing that day?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

That was the one moment in 2003, that Cubs fans thought that our postseason hopes might be dead. The Cubs were lucky with a a great trade for Kenny Lofton. Not only did that trade give them Lofton, who helped them greatly in 2003, but they got Aramis Ramirez, the third baseman of the future.
5. In 2003, three members of the Pittsburgh Pirates came over and joined the team. They were key pieces of the puzzle for the team in 2003. Name those three players.

Answer: Lofton/Ramirez/Simon

When Patterson went down it looked like the season was over, and that there was no way to make the playoffs. The Cubs not only made two trades that would help the team in 2003, but they also got a superstar third baseman in Aramis Ramirez. Unfortunatly it looks like Simon and Lofton were not in Hendry's mind in the off-season. Look for the third base woes of the Cubs to be over in the near future.
6. In the middle of the season the Cubs acquired 2B Tony Womack. Was Womack acquired directly from the Diamondbacks?

Answer: No

Early in the season the Arizona Diamondbacks parted ways with Tony Womack. Even though Womack was a crucial piece of the puzzle for the Diamondbacks in their championship run. The team they traded him to was Colorado. Therefore the Chicago Cubs acquired Tony Womack from Colorado not Arizona.
7. In 2003, the Cubs had an unbelievable starting rotation. The rotation consisted of Prior, Wood, Estes, Zambrano, and Clement. Prior got hurt and Estes got pulled and put into the bullpen. How many different pitchers started for the Cubs in 2003?

Answer: 7

Despite the injury of Prior and the pulling of Estes, the Cubs only had to use 7 pitchers as starters. Part of the reason is that Juan Cruz came through when Prior got hurt. If not for Juan Cruz who knows how many starters they would have had to use. The other pitcher to pitch was Sergio Mitre.
8. Sammy was one home run away from hitting 500 at the start of the year. He was able to accomplish that feat on April 4, 2003. What ballpark did Sammy hit his 500th home run in?

Answer: Great American Ballpark

When the year ended in 2002, Sammy was one home run away from 500. When the 2003 season started that was all that Cubs fans wanted to see. Sammy hit 500. It happened on April 4 and it was a spectacular hit. It seemed to just rocketd of his bat into the right field seats. Unfortunatly, the hype around it all ended on the day Sammy got caught using a cork bat.
9. On August 11, Kerry Wood got his 1,000th strikeout in his young career. In Wood style, he had a total of 9 strikeouts on that night. Which team was he pitching against that game?

Answer: Houston Astros

Kerry Wood started his career in 1998 with the Chicago Cubs. Little would he know that on May 6 in that year, he would strikeout 20. That day has lived on in Cubs fans memories, and that day was one of the greatest rookie outings in the history of the game.
10. On June 7, 2003, the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees met at Wrigley Field. This game was hyped up from the start. Kerry Wood vs. Roger Clemens. This was a great matchup. In the fourth inning of that game, Jason Giambi hit a pop up in foul ground. Kerry Wood and Hee Seop Choi collided. Was Kerry Wood the one that was taken off in an ambulance?

Answer: No

At that moment in the 2003 season, every Cubs fan held their breath. Hee Seop went on the disabled list and when he came back he wasn't the same. He had a hard time hitting. After the 2003 season, the Cubs traded Hee Seop Choi for Derrek Lee.

13. In the 2003 off-season the Cubs got 3 relievers and all had great production the previous year. Which one of the four relievers below were NOT one of the 3 relievers?

Answer: Joe Borowski

14. After the 2002 season the Cubs hired Dusty Baker. Part of the agreement was that Dusty could bring in his own guys to coach the team. On the other hand Jim Hendry wanted one coach to stay. Who was he?

Answer: Larry Rothschild

The Cubs told Dusty Baker that he could bring in any coaches he wanted, but Jim Hendry wanted to keep one coach and that coach was Larry Rothschild. Part of the reason was that he was an outstanding pitching coach. That was proven after the Cubs pitching staff had a great year in 2003.
15. In 2003, the Cubs won the division for the first time since 1989. What team did they play when they won the division?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Cubs and Pirates were postponed the 2 days before because of rain. On the day the Cubs won the division, they played a doubleheader that turned out to be a blessing. Unfortunately, due to the rain out the Cubs did not make it to 3,000,000 in attendance.
