Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Nadine Angerer and Ann-Katrin Berger are German goalkeepers. Angerer played in the 2007 Women's World Cup, succeeding Silke Rottenberg as Germany's Number 1. Ann-Katrin Berger joined Emma Hayes' Chelsea in 2019. Although she was called up for the 2023 Women's World Cup, she did not start and Germany did not make it out of the group stage.
Sarah Bouhaddi is a French goalkeeper. She has won the Champions' League with Olympique Lyonnais, and also had spells with Paris St-Germain. Notably, she's one of the only female goalkeepers to have scored a penalty. She won the Best Female Goalkeeper Award in 2020.
Courtney Brosnan, an Irish-American goalkeeper, chose the Republic of Ireland over the USA. She signed for Everton from West Ham United in 2021 and was the Republic of Ireland's Number 1 in the 2023 Women's World Cup.
Pauline Cope and Mary Earps are English goalkeepers. Cope, a goalkeeper for Millwall Lionesses, was David Seaman's female counterpart for England in the 1990s, while Mary Earps rose up the ranks from fourth-choice goalkeeper, behind the likes of Karen Bardsley and Carly Telford, to England's Number 1 in the 2022 Euros, where she was part of the winning team. She was also a key player for England in 2023 (and I don't mind admitting that she bailed us out plenty of times!), winning the Golden Glove award for the tournament, and was voted Women's Player of the Year 2023.
Christiane Endler is a Chilean goalkeeper. At 6 feet (1.82m), she is one of the more statuesque female goalies. She had her breakthrough when playing for Paris Saint-Germain between 2017 and 2021. She won the Best Female Goalkeeper Award in 2021, after coming second to Sarah Bouhaddi and Sari van Veenendaal in previous years.
Chiamaka Nnadozie is a Nigerian goalkeeper. She made her debut for the Super Falcons in the 2019 Women's World Cup and was the youngest goalkeeper at the time to keep a clean sheet at the World Cup. She was also Nigeria's Number 1 in the 2023 Women's World Cup, putting in a spectacular performance against England.
Zećira Musović is a Swedish goalkeeper. She played for FC Rosengard from 2012 to 2020 before signing for Chelsea and becoming Ann-Katrin Berger's backup in 2021. She started for Sweden in the 2023 Women's World Cup, due to Hedvig Lindahl being injured, and made her mark against the US, making eleven saves in the game. Sweden went on to win 5-4 on penalties, although the final penalty was a controversial one due to it crossing the line by a hair.
Sandra Paņos is a Spanish goalkeeper. She signed for Barcelona in 2015 and won the Women's Champions' League with them in 2021 and 2023, as well as several Copas de Reina. Although Spain won the 2023 Women's World Cup, Paņos did not start for them as she was one of 'Las 15', a group of players who withdrew from the team due to conflict with the then coach, Jorge Vilda.
Hope Solo and Brianna Scurry are American goalkeepers. Solo, a double Olympic gold medallist, is one of the US's most notable goalkeepers, playing for the USWNT from 2000 to 2016 and holding a record number of clean sheets. Brianna Scurry, Solo's predecessor, was a founding member of the WUSA, and the first black woman and female goalkeeper to be elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame. When the US wore the names of various inspirational women on their shirts, goalkeeper Adrianne Franch picked Scurry as her heroine. Both goalies are Golden Glove winners: Scurry in 1999 (jointly with China's Gao Hong), and Solo in 2011 and 2015.
Sari van Veenendaal is a Dutch goalkeeper. She is best known for having been Arsenal's Number 1 from 2015 to 2019, and at their peak, she and Sarah Bouhaddi were considered to be among the top female goalkeepers in Europe. She won the Golden Glove award for the 2019 Women's World Cup, and the Best Female Goalkeeper Award the same year. She retired in 2022.
Manuela Zinsberger is an Austrian goalkeeper. She progressed through the ranks at Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2019, before signing for Arsenal in 2019. The Austrian newspaper 'Die Presse' named her Austrian of the Year in the international success category, and she became the first goalie to win Footballer of the Year in Austria in 2020.
England's Lucy Bronze and Alex Scott, the USA's Megan Rapinoe, Brazil's Marta, Norway's Ada Hegerberg and Zambia's Barbara Banda are the outfield players. Both Rapinoe and Marta played their final World Cup in 2023, while Banda made her World Cup debut with newcomers Zambia and Bronze was called up for England. Scott, now a pundit, provided coverage for the UK.
