Quinnipiac University was founded in 1929 as the Connecticut College of Commerce. Located in Hamden, New Haven County, it adopted its current name in 1951 in honor of the Native Americans who once inhabited the area. They were called the Braves until 2002 when the more socially acceptable Bobcats moniker was adopted.

The school is a member of the NCAA Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for most sports.

Storrs itself was named after the Storrs brothers who founded the University under its original name of Storrs Agricultural College. The school is a member of the Big East Conference for most sports, although their gridiron team went independent in 2019. UConn's greatest achievements have come on the basketball court, with their women's teams winning no fewer than eleven national crowns between 1995 and 2016.

Bulldogs is a common nickname in US college sports, and Yale have a live bulldog mascot, Handsome Dan.
