Quinnipiac University was founded in 1929 as the Connecticut College of Commerce. Located in Hamden, New Haven County, it adopted its current name in 1951 in honor of the Native Americans who once inhabited the area. They were called the Braves until 2002 when the more socially acceptable Bobcats moniker was adopted.

The school is a member of the NCAA Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for most sports.
