The 10 Test playing nations were: England, Australia, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Bangladesh, West Indies and Zimbabwe. Of those four non-test playing nations, Canada and Kenya were placed in Group A, while Ireland and Netherlands were placed in Group B.

Ireland beat England in a Group match which was the biggest upset in this edition of World Cup. England batted first and scored a mammoth 8/327. They bowled well at first and Ireland collpased to be 5/111. But then Kevin O'Brien scored 113 runs from just 63 balls and won the match for his team. England, at that time was ranked 5th in ODIs while Bangladesh was 9th, and Ireland was unranked!

India vs England was a very interesting match. India batted first and scored 338 (they were bowled out in the last over and did not complete their 50 overs). Tendulkar scored a century. But England too scored 338 (for 8 wickets) with their captain Andrew Strauss scoring 158. England batted out their 50 overs.

Tillakratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka) was the highest run-getter with 500 runs from all 9 matches; followed by Sachin Tendulkar (India) with 482 runs from all 9 matches.

Sahid Afridi (Pakistan) and Zaheer Khan (India) wee the highest wicket-takers, both took 21 wickets (from 8 and 9 matches repectively). As Pakistan lost their semi-final, they only played a total of 8 matches.

Yuvraj Singh (India) was awarded the Man of the Tournament Award for his all-round performance. He played all 9 matches for India; and took 15 wickets and scored 362 runs.

The final match was played between India and Sri Lanka in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Sri Lanka batted first and scored 6/274 from their 50 overs, with Jayawardane scoring a century. India chased well with Captain MS Dhoni scoring 91 from 79 balls and Gautam Gambhir scoring 97 runs. MS Dhoni beat a six to win the match for India (4/277 with an over and a half to spare).

He was awarded the Man of the Match of the Final.
