2. He was on time and looked just as handsome as when she first saw him in her home trying, unsuccessfully, to sell burglar alarms to Ken, her stepfather.
3. She remembered, clearly Ken's reaction, "Burglar alarms?", he laughed, "Nobody would bother stealing anything from this dump! Anyway, I have a bolt on the door and a fierce dog!"
4. Chelsea hadn't laughed though. She was far too busy deciding from her vantage point halfway up the stairs, that this was the man she was destined to marry.
5. Neither Ken nor the stranger had noticed her spying on them. Her mother, well, she never noticed her anyway. She was always too busy with the baby to care about what her sixteen year old daughter was up to.
6. Her brother, Hammond, appeared above her, leaning over the bannister and making silly kissing noises. He unfortunately never missed anything. Glaring at him, she then returned her attention to the handsome stranger.
7. He was leaving. Quickly she scanned the note and decided that it would have to do. "I have waited for you forever. Tonight at Dragon's Den. 8pm x."
8. Hammond, although irritating, was easy to bribe. Pressing the note into his grimy hand she hissed, "Hurry, or Ken will catch you!"
9. It went like clockwork. From the window she watched as her younger brother intercepted the man as he climbed into his fancy car. "I'm not just here for dirty work", he muttered darkly on his return. He had no qualms about accepting the £10 note though she noticed.
10. Five hours later, she was at the Chinese restaurant and her confidence was fading fast. As a child when nervous, she would often suffer from nosebleeds. She hoped fervently it wouldn't happen tonight. She wasn't a child anymore though. Sixteen was an adult as far as she was concerned.

12. She had worried that she would be late for her date. She never wore a watch and Hammond had lost his. She had waited for far too long for this moment for it to be ruined by bad timekeeping, so was relieved when she saw on the clock in the restaurant that she was early.
13. She had it all worked out. She had always thought it romantic to elope to Gretna Green like the heroines in the books which she read avidly.
14. How wonderful her life was going to be! To finally bury her past and re-invent herself would be bliss.
15. And here he was! Looking nervously left and right. "Terrific! He's terrific, my life will be terrific!", she thought gleefully. He glanced at his watch. No!, wait, Hammond's watch. Her world collapsed. Her perfect man was a perfect scam!
