Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta play for?

Answer: Switzerland

Midfielder Barnetta, 23 years old at the start of the tournament, had already played 32 matches for Switzerland, scoring six goals in the process. He scored in the 2006 World Cup as well, in the Switzerland victory over Togo. He also missed a penalty in the 3-0 shootout defeat to Ukraine in the Second Round of the World Cup.

Despite this, he was shortlisted for the Best Young Player award.
2. A Leverkusen player, who did striker Theofanis Gekas represent?

Answer: Greece

28-year old Gekas is a good goalscorer in club football, scoring 17 times for Panathinaikos in 2005 and finishing as top scorer in the Greek League. He scored 15 times in 2006 and was the top scorer in the Bundesliga for 2007 with 21 goals. He hasn't had quite the same success with Greece, scoring just 6 in 25 appearances, although he has netted a hat-trick for the Euro 2004 winners against Malta in the qualifying stages.

He scored five of his six international goals in the Euro 2008 qualifying stage.
3. Controversial Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc played for which national team?

Answer: Poland

Boruc had a very good reputation for Celtic as a goalkeeper, helping them to the Champions League in 2007 by saving two penalties in a shootout against Spartak Moscow, as well as saving against Louis Saha in the same competition the year before to help Celtic beat Manchester United. I say controversial because he has been in the news numerous times in his spell at Celtic for making gestures at Rangers fans, usually Roman Catholic gestures, but his reputation as a strong goalkeeper is beyond doubt.
4. Marseille midfielder Samir Nasri played for which country?

Answer: France

Nasri, at 20 years old, was the youngest player in the French squad for the Euro 2008 tournament. He had already made 10 appearances for France, scoring twice for the two time European Championship winners, including the only goal in a qualifier for the tournament at home to Georgia. He was the Marseille player of the year in 2007. Nasri is of Algerian Kabyle origin.
5. West Ham United midfielder Frederik Ljungberg appeared for which country?

Answer: Sweden

Swedish captain Ljungberg had represented Sweden at four major tournaments (not including Euro 2008) and has made 71 appearances for Sweden, scoring 14 goals. Ljungberg, who is 31 years old at the start of Euro 2008, made his name at Arsenal, where he made over 200 appearances before joining West Ham in the close season of 2007. Ljungberg was the first player to score in an FA Cup Final outside of England, in 2001 for Arsenal in Cardiff, and is known for his large tattoos, once contracting blood poisoning as a result.
6. Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski celebrated his 23rd birthday three days before the tournament started. Which country did he represent?

Answer: Germany

Despite being born in Poland, Podolski played for Germany and had an excellent scoring record for them, scoring 25 goals in 47 matches. He made his name at 1. FC Koln before moving to Bayern, but had only found the net nine times for Bayern Munich. He scored four times in the 2006 World Cup held in Germany, and was voted the Best Young Player in the tournament.

He also scored four times in Germany's 13-0 victory against San Marino, and only Gerd Muller and Michael Ballack had scored four times for Germany in an international.
7. Midfielder Florentin Petre featured for which European country?

Answer: Romania

Petre is one of the stars of the Romania team, making his debut in 1998 and had made 50 appearances for Romania. The right winger, 32 at the time of Euro 2008, played for Dinamo Bucharest for over ten seasons before moving to CSKA Sofia. He had scored five times for his country. He was the second oldest Romanian player at the tournament.
8. Striker Colin-Kazim Richards was in the squad for which team?

Answer: Turkey

Despite being born in London, Kazim-Richards had played four times for Turkey, with no goals to his name. He played for Turkey thanks to his mother, who is of Turkish Cypriot descent, with his father being Antiguan. The 21-year old Fenerbahce striker had only scored ten times in his club career, but has impressed at each club he has played for. Most of his career had been in England, with Bury, Brighton and Hove Albion and Sheffield United. Colin went to Turkey after Sheffield United's relegation from the Premiership. Colin is best known in England for being the 'Coca-Cola kid' after Brighton and Hove Albion signed him.
9. Liverpool striker Fernando Torres represented which hotly tipped country?

Answer: Spain

Despite being just 24, Torres had made 49 appearances for Spain, scoring 15 times for the 1964 European Champions. Torres comes off the back of an excellent season for Liverpool, during which he helped them to the Champions League Semi-Finals and scored 24 goals in 33 appearances in the Premiership. He scored three times during the 2006 World Cup, where Spain reached the second round.
10. Sergey Semak represented which country?

Answer: Russia

Semak was the Russian captain and the most capped player in the Russian squad for Euro 2008, making 46 appearances for his country. He played for FC Rubin Kazan but made his name with CSKA Moscow, where he played for ten years. Semak originally lost his place in the national team after Guus Hiddink took charge and missed all of the qualifying campaign, where Russia surprisingly pipped England to qualify. Euro 2008 was Semak's second major tournament with Russia, having been in the squad for the 2002 World Cup.
11. Wesley Sneijder played for Real Madrid, and featured for which country?

Answer: Netherlands

Sneijder made his debut for his original club Ajax aged 18, and went on to become a regular member of the team. He was soon called up to the Dutch team and has made 43 appearances. He has scored 8 goals, and the Netherlands haven't lost any matches that Sneijder has scored in.

He played in all four of the Netherlands matches at Germany 2006 and was also part of the Dutch squad in Euro 2004.
12. Nikola Kalinic was part of which country's squad for Euro 2008?

Answer: Croatia

Despite not being a household name, Kalinic would have his opportunity after an injury to the main Croatian striker Eduardo. He had only made one appearance for his country before Euro 2008, but the 20-year old has been described by coach Slaven Bilic as 'the future of Croatian football'.

He comes to the tournament off the back of an impressive season for club side Hadjuk Split. He scored 18 times in 27 matches for them, and he had been given the number 9 shirt for Croatia.
13. Ivica Vastic is a veteran international for which country?

Answer: Austria

Croatian-born Vastic was the oldest player at Euro 2008, being 38 at the start of the tournament. He played for Austrian side LASK Linz, where he had scored 55 goals in 94 appearances, and had played in Germany and Japan in his career. The most notable part of his career was at Sturm Graz, where he helped the team win two consecutive Bundesliga's, as well as the Austrian Cup three times.

He scored in Austria's last major tournament, France 1998, scoring a late equaliser in a group match against Chile.
14. Jose Bosingwa, moving to English side Chelsea after the tournament, saw him play for which country?

Answer: Portugal

Bosingwa was born in DR Congo but had made 6 appearances for Portugal and had represented Portugal at the 2004 Olympic Games. He also won the Champions League in 2004 with Porto, making eight appearances for Portugal. He had also played for Boavista.
15. Milan Baros spent the season before Euro 2008 on loan at Portsmouth, where he failed to score. Which country did he represent for Euro 2008?

Answer: Czech Republic

Baros started his career at Banik Ostrava, where he earned the nickname 'The Little Maradona'. He then moved on to Liverpool, where he scored just 19 goals in three seasons, unable to break into the team ahead of strikers such as Michael Owen and Djibril Cisse.

However, during his time at Liverpool he won the Euro 2004 Golden Boot for the Czech Republic. He had never had a good scoring record with any club side, but before Euro 2008, has managed 31 goals in 59 appearances for his country. In fact, he had scored more in his 59 international games than in all of his six seasons spent in England.
