MLB expanded three times in the last three decades of the 20th century: 1977 (Toronto Blue Jays & Seattle Mariners), 1993 (Colorado Rockies & Florida Marlins) and 1998 (Tampa Bay Devil Rays (they became the Rays in 2008) & Arizona Diamondbacks). Who was the first of these expansion teams to win it all? Hint

Question 4 of 10

Question 6 of 10
6. In 1979 the NHL and WHA (World Hockey Association) agreed to a merger and the NHL agreed to take 4 of the 6 surviving teams but instead of treating this as an absorbing of teams, these four teams were treated as expansion teams. Those teams were: New England Whalers (who became the Hartford Whalers when they were absorbed by the NHL), Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets, and Edmonton Oilers. Three of the four franchises went on to win the Stanley Cup. Which franchise was the only of the four to *not* win the Cup? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. In 1969 MLB expanded by four, adding two teams in each league: Montreal Expos (they became the Washington Nationals in 2004) and San Diego Padres going to the National League; and the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Pilots (they became the Milwaukee Brewers after one season) going to the American League. By 2019, fifty years later, all four of these franchises had finally played in a World Series. Which one was the last to progress to, and play in, a World Series? Hint

This was the first time an expansion team made it to the finals in the NHL since the St. Louis Blues in the 1967-68 season. Undaunted, the Golden Knights reached the finals again 5 years later in the 2022-23 season, this time bringing home Lord Stanley's Cup. Which team did they beat to win their first Cup? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. In 1960 the American Football League was founded and one of the charter franchises were the Dallas Texans (they became the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963). The NFL, not to be outdone, expanded into Dallas with the creation of the Cowboys. After 12 seasons the Cowboys finally made it to the Super Bowl. Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1967 the NHL doubled in size by creating the Oakland Seals, LA Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars, and St. Louis Blues. They were all put in the newly created Western Division, guaranteeing an expansion team would progress to the finals. The St. Louis Blues reached the finals in the first 3 seasons of their existence (1968-69-70) but failed to win a single game. Which team in this expansion group were the first to win the Stanley Cup?

Answer: Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers were the first of the expansion teams to win the Cup, in 1974, beating the Boston Bruins 4-2 in the best of seven. It was their first appearance in the finals. They followed that up by winning again in 1975, this time over another expansion team (from the 1970 expansion), the Buffalo Sabres. They again won 4-2.
2. Three years after the 1967 expansion, the NHL expanded once again in 1970, adding the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks. They added two more teams in 1972. One was the Atlanta Flames. Who was the other?

Answer: New York Islanders

Long Island, New York was granted an expansion franchise to play in the newly built Nassau Coliseum. This was done to prevent the rival league, the World Hockey Association (WHA), from putting a team in the new building. The Islanders would go on to win four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983.

Incidentally, all 4 championships came at the expense of four other expansion teams, the Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks, Minnesota North Stars, and Edmonton Oilers (technically the Oilers were brought in when the NHL absorbed 4 WHA teams but the league considered these teams expansion teams, rather an official merger with the rival league).

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays won back to back titles in 1992 and 1993 over the Atlanta Braves and my beloved Philadelphia Phillies.
4. In 1976 the NFL expanded by two teams when they added the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although it took 26 years, the Bucs were the first of this expansion class to win the Super Bowl, in 2002. Who did they defeat in that Super Bowl?

Answer: Oakland Raiders

The Bucs had an inauspicious beginning in 1976 losing their first 26 games (14 games in 1976 and then the first 12 in 1977). Three seasons later they played in the NFC title game but lost to the Los Angeles Rams 9-0. After 23 years the Buccaneers finally made it to the Super Bowl where they would dominate the Raiders 48-21 (Super Bowl XXXVII in Jan. 2003).
5. In the 1980s the NBA expanded by 5 teams: Dallas Mavericks (1980), Charlotte Hornets (they became the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013) & Miami Heat (1988), and the Minnesota Timberwolves & Orlando Magic (1989). Which team was the first to win the NBA title?

Answer: Miami Heat

Answer: Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and folded in 2024. The never made it to the finals let alone win a Cup. The closest they came was in 2012 when the then Arizona Coyotes lost to the eventual champion Kings in 5 games in the conference finals. Of the other three WHA teams only the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup in their original city.

The Quebec Nordiques won the Cup in 1996 as the Colorado Avalanche. The Hartford Whalers won the Cup in 2006 as the Carolina Hurricanes. The Atlanta Thrashers (formed 1999) became the Winnipeg Jets in 2011 -- however, they have no ties to the original franchise.

Answer: Washington Nationals

1982 -- The Pilots only spent one season in Seattle before moving to Milwaukee and becoming the Brewers. The franchise made its first WS appearance in 1982, where they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in 7 games.
1984 -- The Padres lost their first WS appearance, vs. Detroit Tigers in 1984, by 4 games to 1.
2019 -- The Expos were in Montreal from the 1969 season until the 2004 season when they moved to Washington DC to become the Nationals. Did the Cowboys win their first Super Bowl appearance?

Answer: No
