Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which sport or game do you associate with the following words: pencil and paper or electronic score board, split, turkey, and gutter ball?

Answer: ten-pin bowling

Primitive forms of ten-pin bowling have been around since about 300 A.D. Millions of people all over the world now enjoy bowling. Schools offer bowling as a school sport. Its a sport that groups from churches and workplaces can organize and enjoy, and simulations are popular in video games. Newer and updated alleys offer electronic scoring since some special knowledge about how to score is needed when using pencil and paper.

After bowling the first ball, if pins are left standing on both sides of the lane, that is called a split and one of the hardest to clear with the second ball.

When a person knocks all the pins down with their first ball, that is a strike. When a person has three strikes in a row, that is a turkey. If a bowler releases the ball and it goes in the trough on either side of the lane, that is a gutter ball. If that was the first ball rolled, the bowler gets another chance to knock pins down.
2. Which sport or game do you associate with the following words of mat, takedown, pin, and Greco-Roman?

Answer: wrestling

Wrestling is an ancient sport and a form of martial art. Ancient warriors wrestled to hone their skills and strengthen themselves. Usually two individuals approach each other on a mat (to cushion the falls) and try to take each other down by pinning.

A winner is declared when one opponent cannot move or gives up. A takedown generally involves advancing on an opponent, getting him off balance, and landing on top of him when he hits the mat. When an opponent is controlled on the ground/mat, that is considered a pin. Winning a match may be determined by how long that person is pinned or pinning may just be used to rest before more exertion. Greco-Roman wrestling is an Olympic sport.

It is usually the sport taught in schools and is not what you see on TV if you're watching the WWE, although many of the stunts that are performed are based on legitimate Greco-Roman moves.
3. Which sport or game do you associate with the following words of singles or doubles, net, racquet, and shuttlecock?

Answer: badminton

Badminton is played with one (singles) or two people (doubles) facing off on either side of a net that is about five feet high. The court is rectangular and slightly larger when doubles are played. It is played with a racquet that is the approximate overall size of a tennis racquet, but not as heavy or substantial since it is used to hit a shuttlecock which only weighs about .18 ounces. Badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992, but was first played in India by British military in the mid 18th century. Now it is very popular with families since the equipment is not costly, the court can be in a grassy yard, an asphalt driveway, or a cement street, and a person doesn't have to be highly skilled to have fun.
4. Which sport or game do you associate with the following words of pike, tuck, half gainer, and springboard?

Answer: diving

Diving is an Olympic sport that involves going into water from a board suspended above the surface. The height of the suspension may vary (1,3,5,7.5 or 10 meters) and the board may be fixed (platform) or flexible and usually aluminum (springboard). In competitive diving, the degree of difficulty is very important and taken into account when judging the approach, the flight and the entry of the dive. Pike and tuck are positions when diving and there are five total.

There are six groups of dives including forward, backward, twisting, etc. Gainers and half-gainers are dives involving somersaults.
5. Which sport or game do you associate with the following words of snatch, bench press, squat, clean and jerk?

Answer: weightlifting

There are several types of weightlifting such as power lifting, weight training, body building, and Olympic lifting are some. Men's weightlifting has been around for many, many years, and women's weightlifting as an Olympic sport is relatively new. The snatch and the clean and jerk are the two techniques for lifting that are judged in the Olympics.

In powerlifting, there are three events. The bench press and squat are two of those, the other is the deadlift.
6. Which sport or game do you associate with the following words of ground target, plastic ring, metal shaft, and fins?

Answer: jarts

Jarts or lawn darts or yard darts are similar to horseshoes. An object is tossed at a target and the person or team getting closest wins. One big difference is, at least in the U.S. and Canada, jarts has been banned. Plastic hoops (like hula hoops) are placed on the ground, usually 35 feet apart.

A lawn dart is thrown at a target hoop. Opposing jarts landing in the same target cancel each others score. The jarts are 12 inch shafts, some all metal, but at the very least with metal pointed tips and three plastic flights or fins at the other end. Jarts was a very popular game for family outings, but the sale of lawn darts was prohibited in 1988 in the U.S. due to numerous injuries.
7. Which sport or game do you associate with the words of offside, cross-checking, high sticking, and hat-trick?

Answer: ice hockey

Hockey, or more precisely, ice hockey is played on ice with sticks, while wearing skates, and hopefully, lots of padding. Teams try to use their sticks to move and manipulate a hard piece of rubber called a puck past the opposing team's goalie and into the net. Offside is one type of violation where play is stopped, opposing players are called to the center line, and two fight for control of the puck when dropped to the ice. Cross-checking is an infraction that causes a referee to stop play. A two-minute penalty is usually accessed. High sticking is also an infraction but may or may not cause a stop in the action.

When one member of the team scores three goals during the game, that is called a hat-trick.
8. Which sport or game do you associate with the words triple-ring, inner-bull, flights, and shafts?

Answer: darts

Darts is a popular game played in the U.K., the U.S. and many other countries. Due to its popularity, professional organizations have sprung up, championships are awarded, competitions are televised. Some speculate that soldiers invented darts by throwing arrows at tree stumps or barrel bottoms. Darts today are thrown at a round target. Most targets are made from sisal fibres. Short fibres are bound together and holes don't remain when a dart is removed.

Some electronic boards are made from plastic with thousands of premade holes. Target boards are divided into wedges and rings.

A triple-ring and an inner-bull are two areas of some boards. How they are divided and the score for landing in an area differ by country and even by state.

However, most target boards have a bullseye or bull which is located in the center of the board. The dart is made up of a point, barrel, shaft, and flight. Most people that enjoy playing buy their own darts and can replace any or all parts of the darts to make them better balanced, fly better, fly farther, etc.
9. Which sport or game do you associate with the words net, racket, backspin, and smash?

Answer: table tennis

Table tennis, or ping pong, has been an Olympic sport since 1988. Two or four people play on a table that is divided into four quadrants, two at each end with a six inch high net across the center. The paddle, bat, or official racket is generally made of wood with rubber.

The part of the racket used to hit the ball can be covered in two different types of material because they create spin and speed differently. Backspin and topspin are ways to hit the ball that can cause problems for newer players.

The ball is only allowed to bounce once per side and balls with spin have a tendency to drop when returned, causing them to bounce a second time on the same side of the net. A smash is another way to hit the ball. A ball is hit with so much force, the opponent is rarely able to return the ball.
10. Which sport or game do you associate with the following words of oval track, straightaway, pit row, and pole position?

Answer: auto racing

Most North American auto racing is done on an oval track and most of those tracks turn left. There are several types and sizes of ovals. Most ovals have three or four corners, two short chutes, and two long straightaways. The oldest, largest and most famous track, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is made up of four 1/4 mile turns/corners, two 1/8 mile short straightaways/chutes, and two 5/8 mile long straightaways. Pits, pit row, pit lane are all names for the area where racing cars pull to one side to get fuel and any service/maintenance if needed.

When multiple cars race, the car and driver that is on the inside of the front row has a definite advantage, as there is no traffic to avoid and they are on the shortest part of the track. This is referred to as the pole position. Different races have different rules for how a car/driver can win that position.
