Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What PGA Tour tournament is played at the Stadium Course, TPC Scottsdale, in Arizona USA?

Answer: Phoenix Open

The tournament began in 1932 and moved to the Stadium Course in 1987. The par-3 16th hole, nicknamed the Coliseum, can have a grandstand crowd of 20,000 hoping to catch one of the hole-in-ones achieved here in the tournament over the years.
2. What event coincides with pleasant weather in the state of Georgia USA, the course's flowering dogwoods and azaleas, and the end of baseball's spring training in Florida?

Answer: The Masters

The timing also avoids other major golf tournaments. The tournament takes place at the Augusta National Golf Club in early April and was conceived in the early 1930s by Bobby Jones, a championship golfer. The tournament has a rich history and tradition, including the iconic green jacket awarded to the winner and the Amen Corner, a stretch of holes known for their difficulty and beauty.
3. Before thousands at St. Andrews in 1978, which U.S. player won his third British Open, to become the first golfer to win at least three titles in each of the four majors?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

Nicknamed the "Golden Bear," Nicklaus is considered one of the all-time greats. With a career spanning over 25 years, he has won a total of 18 major championships, including the British Open three times. Nicklaus' success was due in part to his exceptional mental game and strategic approach to golf.
The 18 majors he won between 1962 and 1986 - six Master, five PGAs, four US Opens and three British Opens.
4. What is the source of Fuzzy Zoeller's nickname?

Answer: His mother

He was born Frank Urban Zoeller Jr. His initials are FUZ, hence his nickname (as his mother called his father Frank and him Fuzzy). He won 10 PGA Tour wins, including the 1979 Masters Tournament. Zoeller is known for his laid-back personality and sense of humour.

His various charitable endeavours include the Fuzzy Zoeller Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships to Indiana high school seniors.
5. What form of competition is the Ryder Cup?

Answer: Match play

A biennial competition originally between British and American golfers, it became Europe versus USA in 1979. There is a mix of foursomes and singles games with players chosen from two teams of twelve. It is unusual for a competition involving professionals as there is no prize money involved.

This is also true for the women's equivalent (the Solheim Cup) and the Presidents Cup (where America competes against non-European golfers).
6. What 1950s U.S. president wanted a tree removed from the 17th hole at Augusta National but it ended up being named after him instead?

Answer: Dwight D. Eisenhower

Eisenhower was an avid golfer, installing a putting green at the White House during his presidency. He was a member of Augusta National Golf Club and had a tree on the 17th hole that he found troublesome. Being named the "Eisenhower Tree" as s result, it was a landmark on the course until it damaged in an ice storm and then removed in 2014.
7. What American player caddied for son Gary in a 1993 pro tournament and, after fighting blisters and fatigue, is quoted as saying: "The first time I've carried a bag since college. I like playing better"?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

Caddying for his son was not a regular occurrence. "The Golden Bear" is a retired American professional golfer. He has won a total of 18 major championships and has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He has also designed over 400 golf courses around the world.
8. What is the maximum number of clubs a player may carry?

Answer: 14

This rule was established by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (R&A) to ensure fairness and consistency in the game. The clubs can be a combination of woods, irons, wedges, and a putter. Some professional golfers use experts to help choose which clubs to carry, depending on the course to be played and their individual playing style.
9. At which North Carolina tournament resort will you find the statue called the 'Putter Boy'?

Answer: Pinehurst

Modelled on the advertising image the 'Golf Lad' used from 1905, this bronze statue was initially known as 'Sundial Boy', with an extra-long golf club to make it work as a sundial. It was placed between putting greens next to the clubhouse but it was not until the 1970s that it was renamed. Pinehurst Resort has hosted the US Open, US Women's Open, Ryder Cup and PGA Championship.
10. Which of these three golfers lost three US Open playoffs?

Answer: Arnold Palmer

Arnold Palmer won numerous titles throughout his career. Despite this, Palmer also holds the unfortunate distinction of being the first player to lose three US Open playoffs. In 1962, he lost to Jack Nicklaus in a playoff, then in 1963 and 1966, he lost to Julius Boros and Billy Casper, respectively.
