Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What golfer won the very first Memorial Tournament?

Answer: Roger Maltbie

The Memorial Tournament was founded in 1976, where Maltbie defeated Hale Irwin on a sudden death playoff. Maltbie himself would go on to have a solid career, including more than 50 top ten placements in the PGA tour, a top five finish in the 1987 Masters Tournament, and would later join NBC Sports as an on-course analyst.
2. In an era where golf was mainly played by the wealthy, this man is considered to have been the first 'professional' golfer, and was never beaten when he played golf with money on the line, up until his death in 1859. Who was he?

Answer: Allan Robertson

Robertson himself was never beaten as an individual when playing for money. In addition, he was a big player in producing clubs and balls for the sport as well.
3. Which golf course lays claim to a stretch of holes nicknamed "Amen Corner"?

Answer: Augusta National

Also referred to as "The National", it was opened in 1932 by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts. It is perhaps most well known for hosting the annual Masters Tournament, which it has done so every year since 1934. The Amen Corner can be found on the second shot at the 11th, all of the 12th, and the first two shots at the 13th hole.

It was coined by Herbert Warren Wind, who wrote for "Sports Illustrated" at the time. Simply put, he wanted to start a trendy nickname similarly to how baseball has the "hot corner" at third base.
4. This player was ranked as the #1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking for a whopping 683 weeks. He was able to skirt through about a decade's worth of controversy to win the Masters in 2019. Who is he?

Answer: Tiger Woods

Woods was the #1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking for a record 683 weeks, which is a little more than thirteen years, beginning in June 1997. In 2009, the National Enquirer published an article accusing Woods of engaging in an affair with a nightclub manager.

This would lead to a series of controversies in which Woods lost numerous sponsorships and would end up stepping away from the game to enter rehabilitation. He would return and eventually win the Masters in 2019.
5. What golfer is credited for the invention of the sand wedge?

Answer: Gene Sarazen

Sarazen debuted with the club during the 1932 Open Championship at Prince's Golf Club. He referred to it as a "sand iron" and it would go on to revolutionize how golfers approached what is referred to as "sand play".
6. From what city does Fred Couples hail?

Answer: Seattle

Fred Couples, donning the nickname "Boom Boom," won 64 professional golf tournaments including the Masters in 1992. In 2013, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
7. Who was the first player to successfully defend his win at the Memorial Tournament?

Answer: Tiger Woods

This took place in the year 2000. Woods would then go on to do it again in 2001. Both were in fairly dominant fashion, winning by five shots in 2000 and seven shots in 2001.
8. What California golf course is nicknamed "Hogan's Alley"?

Answer: Riviera

This was named after the professional golfer Ben Hogan, considered to be one of the greatest players in history. The Riviera Country Club itself is located in California, and is renowned for being extremely expensive to become a member - with expenses going north of a whopping annual fee of $250,000!
9. How many Masters titles does the legendary Jack Nicklaus have to his credit?

Answer: 6

Nicklaus won these in 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975 and one last time in 1986. In 1986, Nicklaus became the oldest golfer to ever win the Masters at the age of 46. This was his eighteenth and final major title.
10. This man simply had a dreadful experience in the world of professional golf- hitting a score of an awful 121 in the qualifying competition for the 1976 Open Championship, being banned from reentry as a result, and then resorting to undertaking disguises and name changes to try and redeem himself. What was this man's real name?

Answer: Maurice Flitcroft

Flitcroft's performance was so bad that it prompted officials at The Open to ban him personally, and then institute a long standing rule which would bar future golfers with similarly awful scores from reentry. That said, Flitcroft was not the kind of man to fade away from the scene quietly.

He would go on to return to The Open under the monikers Gene Paycheki, Gerald Hoppy, and James Beau Jolley.
