Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Arsenal were formed in 1886 and, in 1893, became the first London club to join The Football League, when they were admitted to the Second Division. They were followed by Chelsea, who joined in 1905. In season 1989-90 the First Division had 8 of 20 clubs from London (i.e. 40%): Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea, Wimbledon, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic and Millwall.
Fulham were formed in 1879 and are the oldest professional club in London. They joined The Football League in 1907, when they were admitted to the Second Division. They have played in all four tiers of English league football.
The Football League was formed in 1888. No club from London had won the First Division title for 40 odd years, until Arsenal won it in 1930-31. Tottenham Hotspur became the second, when they won it 20 years later in 1950-51. Chelsea were the third (season 1954-55).
Arsenal were also the first London club to win the First Division title on three consecutive seasons (1933, 1934, 1935 back-to-back).
The first London club to win the FA Cup were Tottenham Hotspur, in 1901, when they were a member of the Southern League (they didn't join The Football League until 1908, when they were admitted to the Second Division). This win by Spurs is unique; it's the only occasion in which the FA Cup was won by a non-league team.
The first London club to win the League Cup was Chelsea, in 1965. Chelsea were also the first London club to be crowned champions of Europe, when they won the UEFA Champions League in 2012.
Arsenal won the Premier League title in 2004-04 undefeated, a feat achieved in the top tier only once before, in 1888-89 by Preston North End (the inaugural season of The Football League).
Tottenham Hotspur won the Double in 1960-61 (League title and FA Cup in the same season), the first team to do so in the 20th century and the third-ever (first one was in 1888-89 by Preston North End; then came Aston Villa in 1896-97).
Sutton United were formed in 1898 and played non-league football for 123 years, until 2021 when they won promotion to the Football League (League Two); as National League champions. They were an amateur team until 1974, when the FA abolished amateur status.
In season 1929-30 Brentford won all of their 21 home league matches. No team has won all their home games since, and they're the only team to have won all home league matches in a season of 42 or more games. Most sports historians and statisticians believe that this record will remain unbroken for the foreseeable future.
Crystal Palace were formed in 1861 and were one of the founder members of the Football Association in 1863. They participated in the first FA Cup tournament in 1871-72. They joined The Football League in 1920 as a foundation member of Division Three (South). They have appeared in all four tiers of English league football. QPR were formed in 1886 and were also a foundation member of Division Three (South). They've also played in all four divisions of English league football.
