Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these players was no longer active in 1999?

Answer: Dave Stieb

Dave Stieb had retired before 1998, but, that year, he tried to make a comeback. It didn't go well, and he ended up playing his last game in 1998. In 1999, Doug Jones pitched in relief for the A's, Stan Belinda pitched in relief for the Reds, and Orel Hershiser started games for the Mets.
2. Of these players, which one did not start the 1999 season with a new team?

Answer: Kenny Lofton

Although Lofton started almost every season in the 2000s with a new team, he was with the Indians for a long time, with a one-year stint with the Braves thrown in. Belle opted out of his White Sox contract after 1998 and signed with the Orioles. Brown signed what was at the time the largest contract in baseball history as he left the Padres and signed with the Dodgers. Clemens, the winner of the 1998 (and 1997) American League Cy Young Award, was traded from the Blue Jays to the Yankees.

The Yankees had won 114 games in 1998 without the league's best pitcher, and the acquisition of Clemens seemed to guarantee that they would easily romp over the competition.
3. What did Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn each do during the season?

Answer: Record career hit number 3,000

They did it on back-to-back days, and Boggs became the first player whose three-thousandth hit was a home run.
4. The Cardinals as a team had a down year, but one of their pitchers had a good season, leading the team in wins and getting selected to his only All-Star game. Who was he?

Answer: Kent Bottenfield

Bottenfield won 18 games despite his relatively high ERA of 3.97. Kile was still with the Rockies, Ankiel was in the minors, and Stephenson's first big year in St. Louis came in 2000.
5. Despite his team's struggles, Mark McGwire had another outstanding year. What did he do for the first time in 1999?

Answer: Lead his league in runs batted in

McGwire led the National League with 147 runs batted in. He had already hit 50 home runs for three seasons in a row before 1999; his 65 homers gave him 50 or more for a fourth consecutive season.
6. McGwire and Sammy Sosa each surpassed 60 home runs for the second year in a row. Over in the American League, though, nobody reached fifty. Who led the AL in homers?

Answer: Ken Griffey, Jr.

Griffey hit 48 to lead the AL for the third year in a row. Palmeiro finished second with 47, Delgado hit 44, and Gonzalez hit 39.
7. Which of these players stayed with the same team throughout the regular season?

Answer: Mike Remlinger

Remlinger came to the Braves between 1998 and 1999, but he stayed with them through 2002. Batista was traded from Arizona to Toronto for Dan Plesac. Mulholland was traded from Chicago to Atlanta along with Jose Hernandez, and Randy Velarde was traded from Anaheim to Oakland.
8. Who was the only pitcher to exceed nine innings in one of his appearances during the season?

Answer: Kevin Millwood

Millwood pitched ten shutout innings against the Cardinals, but he left with the game still scoreless. Atlanta ended up winning.
9. Ivan Rodriguez was the American League Most Valuable Player. Mike Piazza hit forty homers. Another catcher seemed headed for a great year before a mid-season injury put him on the shelf for the rest of 1999. Who was he?

Answer: Jason Kendall

The Pirates' Kendall's injury was gruesome, and it cost him what was turning out to be one of his best seasons. He played in only 78 games.
10. Three Oakland Athletics hit more than thirty homers. Who was not one of them?

Answer: Ben Grieve

Stairs led the team with 38 homers, Jaha hit 35, and Giambi hit 33. Neither Stairs nor Jaha ever surpassed their 1999 home run total.
