Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 2011 National League team has the most letters in their full team name?

Answer: Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Phillies has 20 letters, the most in the NL. Although the franchise began in 1883, this franchise with the biggest name didn't act that bit until the turn of the 21st century. The Royals and Twins are in the American League.
2. Which Hall of Famer and former Dodger nicknamed "The Silver Fox", died in February 2011?

Answer: Duke Snider

Edwin Donald 'Duke' Snider played in 18 seasons from 1947-1964. He also played in one season for the Mets and Giants. Going to six World Series with the Dodgers, Snider had 11 series home runs to his credit, including hitting four in each of the 1952 and 1955 series.

He retired with 407 home runs. Duke died at the age of 84 on February 27. Killebrew was a Minnesota Twin and died May 17, 2011.
3. Hack Wilson of the Chicago Cubs set an amazing record of 191 RBIs in 1930. Wilson's record stood throughout the century and more. Who set the American League record which also was untouched throughout the century?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Gehrig was 28 years old with the Yankees in 1931. His 184 RBIs complimented him leading the league in home runs (46), runs scored (163), and hits (211). He finished fifth in batting with his .341 average, or would have batted for the Triple Crown. He did get his Triple Crown in 1934. Only Hank Greenberg of the Tigers would come close to Gehrig's record, falling short by one RBI in 1937.
4. How many teams watched their managers retire after the 2010 season was over?

Answer: 4

The Braves lost Bobby Cox after helming them for 25 seasons. He also managed the Blue Jays in four. Bobby took the Braves to 14 division titles, five NL pennants, and the 1995 World Series title. He retired with 2504 wins. Lou Piniella managed for 23 seasons.

He had the helm of the Yankees, Mariners, Reds, Rays, and Cubs. He took one World Series title in 1990 with the Reds. The Dodgers watched Joe Torre hang up his clipboard after 29 seasons. Joe managed the Mets, Braves, Yankees, Cardinals, and Dodgers.

Answer: Kirk Gibson

Gibson was an All-American flanker at Michigan State in the late 1970s. Kirk was eyed heavily by the Seattle Seahawks for the NFL Draft as a junior. The Tigers picked him 12th overall in the 1978 baseball draft, and signed him to a contract quickly.

He retired in 1995, then managed the Diamondbacks beginning in 2010. Gibson is probably most noted for his dramatic home run in the 1988 World Series that launched the Dodgers to victory against the Athletics.
6. Cleveland Indian pitcher Chuck Finley missed the start of the 2002 season for what reason?

Answer: His wife beat him up

7. Which of the following decades saw no new expansion team, or a team move from one city to another?

Answer: 1980s

The 1950s saw the St. Louis Browns franchise move to Baltimore, then the Dodgers and Giants move to California. The 1960s saw expansion teams with the Angels, Mets, Colt .45s, Expos, Padres, Royals, and Seattle Pilots. The 1970s brought in the Blue Jays and Mariners, and watched the Pilots move to Milwaukee to become the Brewers.
8. The 1981 season witnessed a strike by baseball players. The players, union, and team representatives voted 967-1 to strike. Who was the only person to vote no?

Answer: Jerry Terrell - Kansas City Royals

Terrell played for the Twins and Royals from 1973-1980. He became the Royals' team representative in 1981, and was the sole holdout in the voting. The season was played in just over 100 games, with the Dodgers beating the Yankees in the World Series, four games to two.
9. Which of these Hall of Fame greats retired with the lowest career batting average?

Answer: Harmon Killebrew

Killebrew played all his 22 seasons with the Senators/Twins franchise except for one, when he retired in 1975 with the Royals. Although hitting 583 career home runs, Harmon retired with a .256 average. The others all had more than 40 points on Killebrew. Aaron of the Braves hit .305, and Musial of the Cardinals along with Robinson of the Dodgers batted .311. Killebrew died on May 17, 2011.
10. Which manager won the National League Manager of the Year Award in 2010?
