Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This player played for 6 teams but is remembered for his days as a Pittsburgh Pirate. He amassed over 300 home runs, nearly 1500 RBIs and over 2700 hits. He also won an All-Star Game MVP honor. Who was the man known as "The Cobra"?

Answer: Dave Parker

Although he hit a sacrifice fly to score a run in an All-Star game, it was his amazing display of his powerful throwing arm that won Parker the MVP Award. He threw out Jim Rice who was trying to stretch a double into a three-bagger in the 7th inning and nailed Brian Downing at home in the 8th to maintain a 6-6 tie.

The NL won it in the 9th when Lee Mazzilli was walked with the bases loaded, forcing Joe Morgan in with the winning run. A strong case could have been made for Mazzilli winning the award since he tied the game with a home run and won it with his bases loaded walk, but Parker's throwing display was one for the ages.
2. This player was an 8-time All Star and 8-time Gold Glove winner. He hit over 400 home runs and won Rookie of the Year honors with the Montreal Expos. He was the first player to win a league MVP for a last place team as well. Who was this man who was referred to simply as "The Hawk"?

Answer: Andre Dawson

Andre "The Hawk" Dawson is also one of 6 players who amassed over 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases in a career. He was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 2010, and deservedly so.
3. This player was the first man ever to get 500 hits with 4 different baseball teams. He ended his career less than 300 shy of the magical 3000-hit club and was known as "Le Grand Orange". Who was this outfielder turned pinch-hitter extraordinaire?

Answer: Rusty Staub

Rusty Staub reached over 500 hits with the Houston Colt 45s/Astros, Montreal Expos, New York Mets, and Detroit Tigers to became one of the best pinch-hitters in the latter part of his baseball career. He was one of the first three players who hit home runs as a tennager, and after turning 40.

He did 2 tours of duty each with the Expos and Mets, and was a fan-favorite in both cities.
4. Although diminutive in stature, this outfielder with the nickname "Little Poison" was still elected to the MLB Hall of Fame in 1967. He played for 5 different teams but is best remembered for his playing days as a Pittsburgh Pirate. Who was this career .316 hitter?

Answer: Lloyd Waner

Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner had over 2400 hits and played on the 1927 Pirate team that was swept by the New York Yankees.
5. This slugger known as "Stretch" spent the majority of his career as a San Francisco Giant. He hit 521 home runs and is a 1986 Hall of Fame inductee. Who was this imposing figure who made the final out in his only World Series appearance in 1962?

Answer: Willie McCovey

Who could forget seeing Willie "Stretch" McCovey dig poor throws out of the dirt at the old Candlestick Park in the 1960s? His screaming line drive that would have been the game winning hit in game 7 of the 1962 World Series, was instead snagged by Bobby Richardson of the New York Yankees. McCovey won Rookie of the Year honors, and an All-Star Game MVP Award, a league MVP, and the NL Comeback Player of the Year award as well. Too bad he never got a ring.
6. This "Spaceman" is probably more known for his outspoken attitude than for his 119 MLB victories in a 14-year career. He did however make an All-Star team and pitched effectively in the 1975 World Series. Who was the "Spaceman"?

Answer: Bill Lee

Bill "Spaceman" Lee was a colorful southpaw who played for the Boston Red Sox and Montreal Expos. He is a knowledgeable, witty, and sarcastic author of 4 baseball books. He was involved in one of the more brutal Red Sox-Yankees brawls in the 1970s in which he tore up his pitching shoulder coming to the aid of Carlton Fisk, and then famously returning to the fight while holding his left shoulder in place.
7. One of the greatest pitchers of all-time, this man spent all but one game of the 17 years of his career for the New York Giants, relying on a screwball ( or 'fadeaway' as he called it ) to amass an incredible 373 career victories. Who was the man known as "The Christian Gentleman"?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

Mathewson also pitched an amazing 79 shutouts, won 30 or more games in a season an astounding 4 times, pitched 2 no-hitters, and had over 2500 strikeouts. His performance in the 1905 World Series was nothing short of legendary where he threw 3 consecutive shutouts in a six-day span yielding only 14 hits for his lone World Series title.

He was a member of the inaugural class of inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
8. Which colorful pitcher who was nicknamed "Dizzy" was 2-1 for the St. Louis Cardinals who won the 1934 World Series in 7 games over the Detroit Tigers.

Answer: Dean

In an injury-shortened career, Jay Hanna "Dizzy" Dean was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953. He made 4 NL All-Star teams, and had a stellar 1934 season where he won 30 games, the NL MVP Award, and his only World Series championship. After his playing days, he became one of the most famous announcers in the history of the game moreso for his humor and country-speak than his eloquence.
9. Although he hit 442 home runs for 8 teams in a 16-year career, this player known as "Kong" missed the normal Hall of Fame induction procedures. Who was this slugger?

Answer: Dave Kingman

Dave "Kong" Kingman hit some of the longest home runs ever seen. Unfortunately, he struck out way too much and ended his career with a lifetime batting average of only .236. He was the first player to play for one team in each of the 4 MLB divisions in the same season ( New York Mets, San Diego Padres, California Angels, New York Yankees) in 1977.

He did however make 3 MLB All-Star teams and was voted AL Comeback Player of the Year in 1984 with the Oakland Athletics.
10. This pitcher won 158 games for 3 different teams in his career, despite missing 2 full seasons due to World War II. Known as "Schoolboy", he was a member of the 1935 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers. What was this 3-time all-star's name?

Answer: Lynwood Rowe

Lynwood "Schoolboy" Rowe spent the majority of his career with the Detroit Tigers, but also threw for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. He appeared in the World Series in 1934 ( a 7-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals), and in 1935 where he went 1-2 despite pitching well in his two starting assignments.
