Answer: 1951

1951 saw Willie win the rookie award over Chet Nichols of the Braves and Clem Labine of the Dodgers. Mays hit 20 home runs in his rookie season and batted .278.
2. Mays became a force to reckon with in his third season of Major League baseball. Winning the NL MVP, he was in the top five for most offensive categories in the season. Which season was this?

3. Willie went to four World Series in his career. How many World Series home runs did he hit?

Answer: 0

Ironically, even though he hit over 600 career home runs, he never cleared the fence in a World Series. His only postseason home run was in the 1971 NLCS against the Pirates, which the Giants lost. Willie's only World Series title came in 1954 against the Indians.
4. What is Willie Mays' born name?

Willie Howard Mays Jr was born in Westfield, Alabama, on May 6, 1931. Willie debuted as a 19-year rookie in 1951.
5. When Mays hit his 600th career home run, he was the _______ player to reach this milestone.

Answer: 2nd

September 23, 1969, Willie reached the 600-mark, and only second to Babe Ruth. Hank Aaron joined the 600 Home Run Club in 1971. Mays retired with 660. Aaron passed both Mays and the Babe to club 755 in his career.
6. Mays won two MVP awards in his career. How many years apart did he win them?

Answer: 11

His first MVP came in 1954, then another with the Giants in 1965. He won his 1965 MVP over two Dodgers, Sandy Koufax and Maury Wills. Willie hit his career high of 52 home runs in the 1965 season and led the league.
7. How many times in Willie's 22-season career, did he hit 50 or more home runs in a season?

Answer: 2

His first 50+ season was in 1955 when he hit 51. He finished fourth for the MVP in that season. The second was in 1965 when he hit his career high 52, winning his second MVP award.
8. Willie Mays was shown the appreciation by the front office of the San Francisco Giants, when they traded him to which team in 1972?

Answer: Mets

May 11 of that year was a shock to all Major League fans, and a lot of finger-pointing went towards the Giants for not letting Willie retire with them. He was traded for one-season pitcher Charlie Williams and cash. Williams pitched in seven seasons for the Giants, going 23-22. Mays played two seasons with the Mets, hitting his final 14 of 660 home runs.

He helped the Mets to the World Series in 1973, but lost to the Athletics.
9. Willie won four home run titles and one batting title in his career. How many times did he lead the league in stolen bases?

Mays not only had the bat, but he had the speed also. He won his four stolen base crowns in consecutive seasons from 1956-1959. He retired with 338 thefts.
10. Which club is Mays not a member of?

Answer: 3000 Games Club

Willie fell just short of 3000 games, appearing in 2992. He had 3283 hits, 523 doubles, and 10,881 at-bats in his great career. Willie retired in 1973, and was immortalized in the Hall of Fame in 1969.
