Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which annual Formula One Grand Prix is staged at the racing circuit in Albert Park?

Answer: Australian

Although the Australian Grand Prix was first run in 1928, it only became a regular fixture on the F1 World Championship circuit in 1985. At that time it was staged at the Adelaide Street Circuit and it moved to the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit at Albert Park in 1996. Alan Jones won in 1980, but there was no home-grown winner in the first quarter of a century after the Australian Grand Prix joined the F1 circuit.
2. Which English cricketer scored a record number of runs in a single Test match, when he followed a first-innings 333 with 123 in the second innings against the West Indies in 1990?

Answer: Graham Gooch

Despite starting with a pair in his first match, Graham Gooch finished his Test career with 8900 runs, establishing a new record total by an English player. He finished his first-class career with 128 centuries, 20 of those in Test matches. He was the 23rd player in cricket history to pass the 100 centuries mark when he did so in the 1992-93 season.
3. What nickname is shared by professional sports teams from West Yorkshire (England), Illinois (USA), a northern Australian state team, and a Spanish national team?

Answer: Bulls

The Bradford Bulls are a professional Rugby League team from northern England. The Chicago Bulls are Illinois' NBA basketball team. Queensland Bulls are the state cricket team from northeastern Australia. The Spanish Bulls are Spain's national Aussie Rules football team.
4. Samuel Peter became the first African boxer from outside South Africa to hold a heavyweight world title when he won the WBC crown in March 2008. What nationality is he?

Answer: Nigerian

Nicknamed 'The Nigerian Nightmare', Samuel Peter became Interim WBC Heavyweight World Champion when his scheduled 2007 fight against the reigning champion, Oleg Maskaev, was called off. He defended his interim title once before eventually winning the crown in ring against Maskaev in March 2008. He lost his title seven months later to former champion Vitali Klitschko.
5. For which team did controversial former England Rugby Union captain Will Carling play his club rugby?

Answer: Harlequins

Harlequin's Will Carling became England's youngest ever Rugby Union captain when he took on the job in 1988 aged just 22. He was also their most successful captain, winning three Grand Slams (in 1991, 1992 and 1995) and taking them to the final of the 1991 Rugby World Cup.

He played 72 times for England, including a record 59 as captain. Australia's George Gregan equaled Carling's record as an international captain in 2007, and South Africa's John Smits surpassed it in 2009.
6. Which player retired from international soccer as Italy's top scorer, having netted a remarkable 35 times in only 42 matches?

Answer: Luigi Riva

Luigi Riva played only 42 times for Italy between 1965 and 1974, but in that short time he overhauled Giuseppe Meazza's of 33 goals that had stood since before WWII. When he retired in 2004, Baggio had scored 27 times in 56 games, whilst Altobelli scored 25 goals in 61 games during the 1980s. Riva played almost his entire 14-year Serie A career with Cagliari, for whom he scored at a rate of better than once every two games, 164 goals in 315 matches.
7. Who was the first snooker player to miss the final black of a televised 147 attempt?

Answer: Ken Doherty

Ireland's Ken Doherty was the first player to win the World Amateur title (which he did in 1989, when he was also World Under-21 champion) and then subsequently go on to win the World Professional title. His 18-12 victory over Stephen Hendry in the 1997 final at The Crucible meant that Doherty was only the third non-British champion (after Australia's Horace Lindrum in 1952 and Canada's cliff Thorburn in 1980).

His fateful miss of the final black in what would have been a rare televised 147 break came in the final of the 2000 Masters.
8. Croatian tennis player Goran Ivaniseviæ surprised everyone (including perhaps even himself) by winning the 2001 Wimbledon Men's Singles title. Who did he beat in the final?

Answer: Pat Rafter

Ivaniseviæ's victory made him the first player in Wimbledon history to win the title after only making it into the draw as a wildcard. At the height of his career, seven years earlier, he had been the world's number 2 ranked player (behind Pete Sampras). He has also reached three previous Wimbledon Singles finals, losing to Andre Agassi in 1992, and to Sampras in 1994 and 1998.
9. At which sport have the Wolverhampton Wolves, the Eastbourne Eagles, and the Coventry Bees all been winners of the British league title in the 2000s decade?

Answer: Speedway

The Wolverhampton Wolves won the Sky Sports Elite Speedway League Championship in 2002 and 2009. The Coventry Bees were champions in 2005 and 2007. The Eastbourne Eagles won the title in 2000, and were also victorious in the Elite League Knockout Cup in 2002 and 2008.
10. Which of these four sporting legends was born first?

Answer: John McEnroe (Tennis)

John Patrick McEnroe Jr was born in Weisbaden, Germany, in February 1959. The former world number 1 tennis player won the Men's Singles at Wimbledon three times and the US Open four times. The others were all born in 1960.
