Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This team is one near and dear to my heart, the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals moved from St. Louis to the Phoenix metropolitan area in 1988. However, this wasn't the first time the Cards changed cities. In 1960 they relocated to St. Louis from what midwestern city?

Answer: Chicago

The Cards are a charter member of the NFL and are the only team to retain their team nickname for their entire existence even though they changed cities. They represented Chicago from the leagues founding in 1920 until they moved to St. Louis in 1960 where they remained until the 1987 season when they moved to the desert.
2. The Oakland A's moved to the Bay Area in the 1968 season. They began play in Philadelphia but, after moving from Philadelphia and then to Oakland, the A's made a stop in this midwestern city for 13 very unsuccessful seasons.

Answer: Kansas City

The A's were one of the better teams in the American League winning 9 pennants and 5 World Series but the team fell on hard times and were forced to sell off key players. Eventually they were sold and moved to Kansas City where they had 13 losing seasons (1955-1967) before moving to Oakland.
3. In 1970 the Milwaukee Brewers played in their first season. However, they weren't an expansion team. The previous season they played in another city and were known by another name. What was this team?

Answer: Seattle Pilots

The Pilots began play in 1969 and were a part of the American League West. They struggled terribly in that season mostly because their stadium, Sick Stadium was a poor choice for a major league stadium. The team also fell into financial trouble. With their proposed new stadium stuck in zoning hell, losing money, and their poor performance on the field (they finished last in the division winning only 64 games and finishing 33 games out of first) they were eventually sold to Bud Selig.
4. The Washington Senators were a charter member of the American League upon its founding in 1901. After years of futility, they moved to Minneapolis in 1960 and became the Twins. In 1961 MLB put an expansion team in Washington, DC and named them the Senators. This Senators team were also terrible and after 10 seasons they, too, picked up and moved and became which team?

Answer: Texas Rangers

Relocation for both Senators franchises paid off. The Twins have enjoyed success winning their second and third World Series titles (1987 and 1991). Their first was in 1924. The Texas Rangers, however, have enjoyed a modicum of success. It took them 25 seasons to finally make the playoffs but since that first playoff season they've won 7 division titles, 3 pennants, and they finally won their first World Championship in 2023.
5. The American Football League was established in 1960. One of the charter members was put in Dallas and became the Dallas Texans. They were owned by AFL founder Lamar Hunt. That same season the NFL expanded to Dallas when the Cowboys were created. After 3 seasons Mr. Hunt decided his fortunes would be better if he moved to another city. Where did Mr. Hunt move his team and what were they called?

Answer: Kansas City Chiefs

The Texans were successful in Dallas winning the 1962 AFL title but Lamar Hunt decided Dallas couldn't support 2 teams so he decided to move to Kansas City where they won Super Bowl IV in January 1970 in one of the biggest upsets in football history bested only by the Jets winning the previous year.
6. In 1972 the World Hockey Association was founded. After 7 seasons four of their teams were absorbed into the NHL: Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques, and Hartford Whalers. Over the years three of these teams have changed cities with the Oilers the only remaining original WHA team still in existence in the same city. The first to move were the Nordiques who moved to Denver and became the Colorado Avalanche. The next team to move was the Jets who moved to the desert to become the Phoenix Coyotes(then changed to the Arizona Coyotes). The final team to move were the Hartford Whalers who picked up and moved south to become who?

Answer: Carolina Hurricanes

After 25 seasons in New England and after failing to procure the funding for a new arena, the Whalers moved to North Carolina and became the Hurricanes. After only winning one division title in Hartford, the Hurricanes have been far more successful winning the Stanley Cup in 2006.

The Avalanche have also been successful since moving to Denver winning three Stanley Cups but the most successful of the WHA franchises have been the Edmonton Oilers who not only won championship but were an actual dynasty winning five Stanley Cups between 1984-1990.

As for the original Jets/Coyotes...
7. The original Winnipeg Jets moved to Arizona to become the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996 then changed to be the Arizona Coyotes in 2014. After years of futility and uncertainty with zero Stanley Cups and only 1 division title and after years of arena disputes, the 2023-24 season was their last in Arizona. To what city did they move?

Answer: Salt Lake City, Utah

The assets of the Coyotes which include the players moved to Salt Lake City in 2024.
8. The Los Angeles Rams are one of the most oft moved teams in NFL history. Most everyone knows that the Rams moved from Los Angeles to St. Louis and back to Los Angeles but they actually began play in what other city?

Answer: Cleveland

The Rams began play in Cleveland in 1936 and remained there until 1945 when they moved to Los Angeles after that season. The Rams have the distinction of winning championships in three different cities winning the NFL title in 1945 while in Cleveland, the Super Bowl in 1999 while in St. Louis, and again in 2021 while in Los Angeles.
9. Philadelphia has a rich basketball history. From 1946-1962 the Warriors called Philadelphia home. It was with the Philadelphia Warriors when Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points against the Knicks. After that season the team relocated to the Bay area and were renamed the San Francisco Warriors. But the NBA wasn't finished with Philadelphia just yet. For the 1963-64 season the Philadelphia 76ers began play. Before that from 1949-1963 they played in another city under another name. Who were the Sixers before moving to Philly?

Answer: Syracuse Nationals

The Nationals had some success winning the NBA title in 1955. After moving to Philadelphia and rebranding as the 76ers, they have been competitive. They won two championships: 1967 and 1983.
10. The San Antonio Spurs were one of four teams absorbed into the NBA from the upstart ABA, along with the Indiana Pacers, Denver Nuggets, and NY Nets. However, they didn't begin in San Antonio. As teams in expansion leagues are apt to do, when one city doesn't work another might. Who were the Spurs before moving to the land of the Alamo?

Answer: Dallas Chaparrals

The Chaparrals, formed in 1967, were a perennial playoff team in the upstart league but found little success otherwise. After moving to San Antonio in 1973 they became 1 of 4 teams absorbed into the NBA in 1976. The three incorrect answers were all original ABA teams and with the exception of the Colonels did change cities and names but none were invited to the NBA.
