1. Two St. Louis pro teams shared the name Cardinals. Which two sports did they represent?

Answer: Baseball and football

The football team was in St. Louis from 1960-87. They actually started in Chicago before their time in St. Louis and since 1987 have been in Phoenix. The baseball franchise has been around since 1892 and were called the Browns until 1900 when they were renamed the Cardinals.
2. Football and baseball teams playing concurrently in New York shared the same name. What was the name the teams shared?

Answer: Giants

Though the others were all New York teams, the Giants was the only name shared by two sports at the same time. The baseball Giants moved out to San Francisco in 1957. They were called the Gothams when they joined the league in 1883 and became the Giants in 1885. The football Giants have been in the NFL since 1925.
3. The name 'Colorado Rockies' has been used by teams in which two sports?

Answer: Baseball and hockey

The hockey Rockies played in Denver from 1976 to 1982. They started off as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974. In 1982 they moved from Colorado to New Jersey and became the New Jersey Devils. While in Colorado they made the playoffs once. The baseball Rockies started play in 1993, making the World Series in 2007 as a Wild Card contender.
4. Baseball and football in Washington, D.C. was played by teams sharing which name?

Answer: Senators

The football Senators played in the American Professional Football Association (later becoming the NFL) from 1921-41.

The baseball team had three incarnations. In the first, they were in the National League from 1891-99. The second Senators team, playing in the AL from 1901 moved to Minnesota in 1960, becoming the Twins. In 1905, they officially changed their name to the Nationals but the Senators name stuck and the two were used interchangeably. They were then replaced by a new, third Senators expansion team who later relocated to Texas, renaming themselves the Rangers.
The next Washington team re-used the name Nationals - a throwback to the second Washington baseball team.

The Redskins were actually a transplant of the Boston Braves football team in 1937.
5. What was the name of two teams, one playing football and the other baseball, who shared the same name?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

The football Reds, played only in the 1932-3 full football season and didn't finish out the next season. The baseball Reds, were one of the charter teams of the National League in 1876. After the original team folded, they were revived in 1881 in The American Association then moved back to the NL in 1890.
6. Baseball, hockey and football in this western Pennsylvania city all had teams which shared the same name. What were they called?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The only name that was shared by 3 different sports in the same city was the Pittsburgh Pirates. The baseball Pirates joined the National League in 1887 and have been playing there ever since. They were involved in the first ever World Series with HOF'er Honus Wagner leading the way.

The football Pirates joined the NFL in 1933, borrowing the name from the senior Pittsburgh team - baseball's Pirates. They became the Steelers in 1940. Finally, the hockey Pirates who played from 1915-25 were originally called the Yellow Jackets and played in a rival league to the NHL. In 1925 they joined the NHL, changed their name to the Pirates and played there for 5 years. They then moved to Philadelphia. There they played only one year as the Quakers and closed up shop at the end of the campaign.
7. Which city had two teams from different pro sports called the Falcons? (It may not be what you think)

Answer: Detroit

The Falcons were teams in hockey and basketball in Detroit. The hockey team went on to become the Redwings after holding the name Falcons for only two seasons(1930-32) while the basketball Falcons folded after one year(1946-7) in the pro Basketball Association of America, the NBA's predecessor.
8. The name Brooklyn Dodgers is used by 2 different sports. One of these is baseball. Which is the other?

Answer: Football

The football Dodgers played in the NFL from 1930-43 and continued for one more year as the Brooklyn Tigers. They shared Ebbets Field with the baseball team. There was actually a second Brooklyn Dodgers team that played in the All-America Football Conference, a rival to the NFL. They merged with the New York Yankees in 1949 and folded after the season even though they made it to the semi-finals.

The baseball Dodgers had been around since 1887 until they moved to LA in 1957. They played in Ebbets Field from 1913 on.
9. This sports name was used by teams in baseball and football in this city, home of the "Slugger".

Answer: Louisville Colonels

The baseball Colonels had been around for a while before they joined the National League in 1891. They dropped out of the league in 1899. The football Colonels played in the NFL during the 1926 season and didn't score a single point the whole season, being shutout in every single game they played.
10. This name was shared by two New England teams - one in baseball and the other in football.

Answer: Boston Braves

In football, the team began play in 1932. They then relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1937 and were renamed the Redskins. The baseball Braves have moved twice - the first time in the 50s to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta. They still carry the name Braves.
