She began gymnastics at the age of two or three.

Gabrielle "Gabby" Douglas was born on December 31, 1995 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She began gymnastics at the age of six. Her nickname was "The Flying Squirrel".

Both Aly Raisman and Aliya Mustafina tied for bronze. To determine the winner, the judges dropped the lowest scores of each. This resulted in Aliya Mustafina winning the bronze and Aly placing fourth.

Aly's original balance beam score was 14.966. But, after the U.S. team requested a review, the judges changed it to 15.066. This caused her to be tied with Cătălina Ponor (Romania). After the tie-breaking procedure, Aly was given the bronze.
Gabby also participated in the balance beam event, but she placed seventh.

Aly was the first American woman to win gold in this event. She also won the most medals of all the U.S. team members, which was three.
