Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the team's General Manager in 1991?

Answer: Billy Hicks

Billy Hicks was involved with the World League of American Football from an early stage. Gareth Moores was involved in 1995 and 1996. Alton Byrd (the former NBA basketball player) took the helm in 1997 and the Monarchs folded in 1998. Many fans blame poor management for this. Oliver Luck was a former NFL player who was GM of the Frankfurt Galaxy, then the Rhein Fire, before becoming the league boss in 2000.
2. What helmet logo did the London Monarchs have?

Answer: The letter "M" made to look like a crown

The M was a rounded capital M with a line underneath it and a small cross above it, so that it looked like a crown, or (if you like chess) the top of the king on a chessboard.
3. Who was the team's head coach in 1991?

Answer: Larry Kennan

Larry Kennan's quiet but focused style of leadership inspired the team to an awesome first season. He took the team and won the first World Bowl at Wembley.
4. Who coached the Monarchs in 1992?

Answer: Ray Willsey

Ray Willsey made the move from defensive co-ordinator in 1991, to head coach in 1992. However, the team performed poorly, resulting in a dismal record for that year, just 3 wins and 1 draw from 10 games.
5. What colours did the Monarchs play in?

Answer: Royal blue and gold

Originally, all teams were going to be given unusual eye-catching colours. In the end, only one team got them. The Orlando Thunder had a top that was a fluorescent green, which became one of the most collectable tops in the league.
6. In chronological order, which stadiums did the team play in?

Answer: Wembley, White Hart Lane, Stamford Bridge, Crystal Palace

It was the glorious Wembley Stadium first before they knocked down the beloved original stadium and replaced it. After that, they moved to White Hart Lane, home of Tottenham Hotspur FC. They then moved to Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea FC. They then went to Crystal Palace athletics stadium. True, they did have so-called home games in Bristol, and Birmingham, but most fans prefer not to talk about them as it was part of a failed effort to get people around the country more interested.
7. When the Monarchs qualified for the semi-final playoff, they couldn't play at Wembley Stadium as it was booked up. So where did they play their semi-final game instead?

Answer: New York, USA

They played their semi-final at Giants Stadium, the home ground of the New York and New Jersey Knights. The stadium is better known as the home groun of both the New York Giants and the New York Jets. The Knights were the Monarchs' biggest rivals as the teams just didn't seem to like each other, and were the Monarch's opponents that day.

The Knights controlled the game from early on, but the Monarchs staged a great comeback to earn their place in the first ever WLAF final, World Bowl 91 at Wembley.
8. Which of these NFL players did not play a regular season game for the London Monarchs?

Answer: Jay Fiedler (quarterback)

Jay Fiedler played for the Miami Dolphins between 2000 and 2004, but walked out of the Monarchs' training camp before they played any regular season games.
Brad Johnson played as starting QB in 1995. Originally signed by the Minnesota Vikings, he has also been a starting QB for the Washington Redskins, and led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their Super Bowl win in 2003. The Fridge did actually play for the Monarchs in 1996. Despite helping to stop the other teams from running the ball up the middle, he never performed particularly well, and fans noticed his absence from many training sessions as he was being used to generate publicity for the team.

Dedrick Dodge played safety for the Monarchs in 1991, and then played in Superbow XXIX for the San Francisco 49ers and in Superbowl XXXII for the Denver Broncos.
9. What were the Monarchs' cheerleaders called?

Answer: The Crown Jewels

The Crown Jewels were consistently some of the best cheerleaders in the league. Blitz was the name used for the girls and boys used in 1995 as a modern replacement for the Crown Jewels. However, the cheerleaders were brought back by public demand the following year.
10. Who was the British kicker that played for the Monarchs in 1991?

Answer: Phil Alexander

All of them played as kickers in the WLAF. Clive Allen, a former England soccer player was a kicker for the team in the late 1990s. Don Silvestri was an American, who played for the team in its final season in 1998. Gavin Hastings, the Scottish ex-international rugby player, never played for the Monarchs, but did have a place on the rost of their British rivals, the Scottish Claymores.
