Twenty-four teams were divided into 6 groups. The group winners, runners-up and 4 best third-placed teams qualified for the knockout round (aka the Round of 16).
GROUP A -- Turkey, Italy, Wales, Switzerland -- Italy won all the 3 games to top the group with 9 points. Wales finished second with 4 points (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss) ahead of Switzerland with the same record, with a superior goal difference. Switzerland advanced to the next round as one of the four best third-placed teams.
GROUP B -- Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Russia -- Belgium finished first with 9 points from 3 wins. The other 3 teams finished with the same number of 3 points (1 win, 2 losses). Denmark advanced to the next round with the best goal difference among the 3 teams.
GROUP C -- Netherlands, Ukraine, Austria, North Macedonia -- Netherlands won all 3 games to top the group with 9 points. Austria qualified for the next round with 6 points (2 wins, 1 loss). Ukraine finished with 3 points (1 win, 2 losses) and advanced to the next stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
GROUP D -- England, Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic -- England topped the group with 7 points (2 wins, 1 draw). Croatia and Czech Republic finished with 4 points (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss). Croatia qualified for the next round in second place with the same goal difference scoring more goals. Czech Republic also advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
GROUP E -- Spain, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia -- Sweden finished first with 7 points (2 wins, 1 draw) and Spain finished second with 5 points (1 win, 2 draws). Both teams advanced to the round of 16.
GROUP F -- Hungary, Portugal, France, Germany -- France topped the group with 5 points (1 win, 2 draws). Both Germany and Portugal finished with 4 points (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss). Germany finished second, as they beat Portugal 4-2. All 3 teams advanced to the next round.
ROUND OF 16 -- Belgium knocked out Portugal with a 1-0 win. Itay edged Austria 2-1, Spain beat Croatia 5-3 (a.e.t), Ukraine defeated Sweden 2-1, England won 2-0 against Germany, Czech Republic beat Netherlands 2-0 and Denmark had a 4-0 big win against Wales. Switzerland beat France 5-4 on penalty kicks, after the score tied at 3-3 (a.e.t.).
QUARTER-FINALS -- Spain beat Switzerland 3-1 on penalty kicks after the score tied at 1-1 (a.e.t.). Italy beat the no. 1 seed team Belgium 2-1, Denmark edged Czech Republic 2-1. England trounced Ukraine 4-0.
SEMI-FINALS -- Italy beat Spain 4-2 on penalty kicks after the score tied at 1-1 (a.e.t.). England edged Denmark 2-1 after extra time. The winning goal was scored by Harry Kane in the 104th minute.
FINAL -- Luke Shaw put England ahead scoring in the 2nd minute. Leonardo Bonucci equalized for Italy in the 67th minute. The game was decided by penalty kicks with no goals scored in extra time. Italy won the title 3-2 on penalty kicks. Rashford, Sancho and Saka missed the last 3 penalty kicks. Italy won their second European title (their first was in 1968). Thuis was England's first-ever appearance in a Euro final.
A total of 142 goals (2.78 goals per match) were scored over 51 matches. A total of 1.2 million people attended the matches. Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was voted as the Player of the Tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo was given the top-scorer award, with 5 goals and 1 assist.
