Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Newmarket (Cesarewitch)

Newmarket is a market town in the English county of Suffolk. It is regarded as the birthplace of the sport of thoroughbred horse racing, as practiced in countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Ireland. Newmarket and its immediate environs are home to many racehorse training and breeding centres, as well as the National Horseracing Museum.

It has two large racecourses, the Rowley Mile and the July Course. Two of the five British Classics - the 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas - are raced on the Rowley Mile, as is the Cesarewitch, while the July Course is home to the July Cup and the Falmouth Stakes.
2. Aintree (Grand National)

Aintree is a village in the Merseyside borough of Sefton, on the edge of Liverpool. It is home to the Aintree Racecourse, which every year hosts the Grand National, one of the world's most famous and prestigious steeplechases (races including jumps, such as ditches and fences).

The racecourse opened in 1829, and the first "Grand National" was run ten years later, in 1839, under the name of the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase. Aintree is also home to two shorter courses, the Mildmay Course and the Hurdles' Course.
3. Newcastle (Northumberland Plate)

Newcastle-upon-Tyne is a large city in North-East England and is home to a racecourse at Gosforth Park on the north side of the city. The course was established in 1881, and the following year hosted the Northumberland Plate for the first time. That race had first been run in 1833 and is now one of the most prestigious flat races in England.
4. Doncaster (St Leger)

The Yorkshire town of Doncaster is home to one of Britain's oldest racecourses, the Town Moor Course, which dates back to at least 1595, when it appears on a local map. Two of England's oldest horse traces, the St Leger and the Doncaster Cup, are both contested here.

The Doncaster Cup was first raced in 1766, on a course at Cantley Common, and moved to the Town Moor Course in 1776. The St Leger is almost as old, being initiated in 1776 by a local politician named Anthony St Leger and is one of Britain's five "Classic" horse races.
5. Cheltenham (Champion Hurdle)

Cheltenham racecourse is located at Prestbury Park on the outskirts of the Gloucestershire spa town of that name. It is best known for the four-day National Hunt race meeting known as the Cheltenham Festival, which has been held there annually since 1911 (although its origins are considerably older).

A number of prestigious and wealthy races are contested during the Festival, including the Stayers' Hurdle, the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
6. Epsom (Derby)

Epsom is a town on the outskirts of London, which is home to the Epsom Downs racecourse. Racing was taking place around Epsom Downs at least as far back as the mid-seventeenth century, and it is home to two of Britain's five Classic horse-races. The most prestigious of these, the Derby, was first raced in 1780. The second, the Oaks, in fact pre-dates the Derby by a year.
7. Chepstow (Welsh Grand National)

Chepstow is a small town in South Wales on the River Wye. On the outskirts of the town is Chepstow racecourse, which first opened for business in 1926. Since 1949 it has been home to the Welsh Grand National, which is normally held just after Christmas, on the 27th December.
8. Royal Ascot (Queen Anne Stakes)

The racecourse at Ascot is unusual (but not unique) in hosting both flat races and National Hunt events (with jumps). Being located a few miles from Windsor Castle, it has close links with the British Royal Family, and the Royal Ascot Meeting in June is a popular event in the British social calendar.

The racecourse was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, and one of the most prestigious races - the Queen Anne Stakes - is named in her honour.
9. York (Ebor Handicap)

The historic city of York is the county town of Yorkshire and has a long and distinguished history. It is home to one of Yorkshire's oldest racecourses, located to the south-west of the city, and dating back to the eighteenth century. Every August it hosts a four-day event known as the Ebor Festival (after the city's Roman name of Eboracum) and which includes the Ebor Handicap race.
10. Ayr (Scottish Grand National)

Ayr is an ancient town in southwest Scotland. The current racecourse opened for business in 1907, replacing an earlier course dating back to 1771. The new course was originally laid out for flat racing, but in 1950 a jumps course was added. In 1966 the Scottish Grand National moved to Ayr after its previous home, the Bogside Racecourse at Irvine, closed down.
