Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Queen has her own thoroughbred breeding stud: On which of the Royal Estates is this situated?

Answer: Sandringham

The Royal Studs are the oldest in the world. Edward VII (son of Queen Victoria) was responsible for the relocation of the stud from Windsor to its present home in Sandringham, Norfolk, in the early 20th century. The stud is run on a commercial basis and has stood several famous stallions in the past: Persimmon, Shirley Heights, Aureole, and top stallion as 2005 Derby winner, Motivator.
2. Which notable Royal trainer carried on training after being confined to a wheelchair after a hunting accident?

Answer: Major Dick Hern

After being sole trainer for her Majesty at the Royal racing stables in Berkshire, Major Hern was sacked when he became too ill to carry on in 1988.
3. What is the name of the Royal racing stables which were sold as being financially unviable, when the incumbent trainer suffered serious losses?

Answer: West Ilsley Stables

Lord Huntingdon took over at West Ilsley after the sacking of Dick Hern. He did, however, suffer heavy losses and the stables and estate were sold.
4. Which Royal trainer claimed to be a direct descendent of Robin Hood?

All male heirs of the Lord Huntingdon title incorporate the name of Robin Hood in their full name. Lord Huntingdon was named William Robin Hood Hastings-Bass before accession to his title.
5. Who was the Queen's racing manager up until his death in 2001?

Answer: Lord Carnarvon

Lord Carnarvon, owner of Highclere Castle in Berkshire, was the son of the same Lord Carnarvon who financed Howard Carter's exploration and discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen in the Valley of Kings, Egypt in 1922.
6. Ascot racecourse is famous for its Royal meeting in June of each year. Which Queen was responsible for its foundation?

Answer: Queen Anne

Ascot racecourse came into being over 300 years ago. At the Royal meeting the Group One Queen Anne stakes for 4-year old and above, is still run over the straight mile. First run in 1840 as the Trial Stakes, the name was changed in 1930 to commemorate Queen Anne, who established racing at Ascot in 1711. Sadly, there is no record of the winner of this race.
7. Which famous colt belonging to the Queen, won the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1954, and went on to become Champion sire in 1960 and 1961?

8. Which aptly named colt won the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot in 1992?

Answer: Colour Sergeant

David Harrison was 19 when he was the winning jockey on Colour Sergeant. He went on to have a successful career and was one of the most gifted jockeys of his generation. He sadly broke his neck in a terrible fall in Hong Kong in 2001, and his racing career was over at 28.
9. Which of the Queen's great fillies won the 1000 guineas and French Oaks in 1974?

Answer: Highclere

Highclere (named after the Queen's racing manager's country home) went on to be a successful broodmare. Her great filly, Height of Fashion, was the dam of Group 1 winners Unfuwain, Nashwan, and Nayef. Bred and raced by the Queen, Height of Fashion was sold to Sheikh Hamdan of Dubai at the end of her three-year old career.
