In the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and third, the Giants'Al Bridwell hit what appeared to be a game-winning single. As the runner on third jogged towards home, Fred Merkle, the runner on first, apparently (the facts are in dispute) failed to touch second base.

The Cubs recognized this and in a mad scramble, got the ball to second baseman Johnny Evers, who stepped on the bag for a force out. Because the Polo Grounds crowd had stormed the field, the game was ended and declared a tie.

As it happened, the Cubs and Giants ended the season with identical records and were forced into a playoff that the Cubs won. Merkle's "boner" had, in effect, cost the Giants the pennant. Jack Pfiester and Christy Mathewson started for the Cubs and Giants, respectively. Cubs ace Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown did not appear in this game.

Herb Pennock relieved George Pipgras in the seventh inning with the score tied and was the beneficiary of Ruth's two-run blast in the eighth. Tom Zachary, who gave up the record-breaking home run, was the losing pitcher. Lefty Grove never pitched for either the Yankees or the Senators.

Lew Burdette gave up 12 hits but recorded a 13-inning shutout. The first Brave to get on base was Felix Mantilla who led off the bottom of the 13th by reaching on a throwing error by third-baseman Don Hoak. Hank Aaron was intentionally walked and Joe Adcock followed with a home run. Adcock passed Aaron on the bases and was officially given credit for a double, but the game was over. Warren Spahn and Bob Buhl were starting pitchers for the Braves that year, but did not participate in this game. Vernon Law pitched for the Pirates and also did not appear in this game.

Reliever Mike Fornieles pitched the last two innings to get the win over the Baltimore Orioles. Williams' home run in the eighth inning was not the deciding blow. The Red Sox scored twice in the ninth to win the game, 5-4. Jack Fisher, who gave up the home run to Williams, was also the losing pitcher. Bill Monbouquette, who led the Sox in wins that year, did not appear in this game, while Early Wynn never played for either the Red Sox or Orioles.
