Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player penalized 400 penalty minutes in one season?

Answer: Dave Schultz

Maybe he's proud of this achievement, maybe not. Schultzy sat in the box for a record amount, 472 minutes to be exact, during the 1974-75 season with the Philadelphia Flyers. Fontinato (NY Rangers) was the first player penalized 200 minutes in a season (1955-56); O'Reilly (Bruins) was the first player to have 200 pim and finish in the top 10 in scoring in one season (1977-78); and Stevens (Penguins) was the first player to compile 200 pim and 100 points in one season (1991-92).
2. Who was the first player to be penalized 10 times in one game?

Answer: Chris Nilan

"Knuckles" Nilan took this honor on March 31, 1991, while playing for the Boston Bruins against the Hartford Whalers. His tally included six minors, two majors, one misconduct, and one game misconduct.
3. Who was the first player penalized more than 60 minutes in one game (funny, since a game lasts 60 minutes, unless it goes into overtime)?

Answer: Randy Holt

L.A. Kings player Randy Holt should have never suited up for this game on March 11, 1979, against the Flyers. He was assessed one minor, three majors, two misconducts, and three game misconducts, for a grand total of 67 penalty minutes (his team lost the game, 6-3). Brad Smith of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Reed Low of the St. Louis Blues are next in line, having each been penalized 57 minutes in one game during their careers; Smith on November 15, 1986, and Low more recently on February 26, 2002.
4. What was the first team to allow 400 goals against in one season?

Answer: Washington Capitals

Poor Caps! Their first year in 1974-75 must have been largely spent taking faceoffs at center ice after allowing so many goals. Goaltenders Michel Belhumeur, Ron Low, and John Adams, let 446 pucks by them in 80 games. But on a bright note, Low did manage one shutout.
5. What was the first team to lose 70 games in one season?

Answer: San Jose Sharks

Both the Sharks and the Senators lost 70 games in 1992-93, but the Sharks did it five days before the boys of Ottawa, on April 8, 1993. If it helps aid your suffering even further Sens fans, the Sharks actually managed to lose 71 games, as opposed to Ottawa's 70.
6. What was the first team to go 30 consecutive games without a win in one season?

Answer: Winnipeg Jets

The pain and suffering lasted for nine weeks for the Jets, stretching from October 18 to December 20, 1980, in just their second season in the NHL. During that stretch they were 0-23-7, and they only managed nine wins throughout the entire season.
7. What was the first NHL team to have its name misspelled on the Stanley Cup?

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs of 1963 became the "Leaes" for the first team name typo. But the "Bqstqn" Bruins (1971) and New York "Illanders" (1981) followed.
8. Who was the first player ordered into a drug treatment center?

Answer: Bob Probert

While each of these players have had his problem with drugs, Probert was the first to be placed into rehab in September of 1994 while playing with the Blackhawks. Following a motorcycle accident in July of that year, where traces of cocaine were found in his system and his blood-alcohol level registered three times the legal limit, he was suspended by his team without pay and sent to a league-supervised treatment center in California. On April 25, 1995, he was reinstated by the league, and proceeded to remain a Blackhawk until his retirement after the 2001-02 season.
9. Who was the first player sentenced to jail time for an on-ice incident?

Answer: Dino Ciccarelli

The incident happened January 6, 1988, while Ciccarelli's North Stars faced the Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Garden. Ciccarelli struck Leafs defenseman Luke Richardson in the head with his stick not once, not twice, but thrice, causing his arrest for aggravated assault where he spent a whopping 2 hours in jail and paid a monetary fine.
10. Who was the first player suspended during a Stanley Cup Final?

Answer: Jiri Fischer

Not an easy thing to accomplish, considering how long it took for it to happen! Red Wings defenseman Fischer was suspended for one game in game four of the 2002 Stanley Cup Final for cross-checking Tommy Westlund of the Carolina Hurricanes in the face. Fischer didn't get to see NHL action again until that fall. The Wings clinched the Cup the following game.
