Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the carnival comes to town, a young boy steals the nose off a clown named Zeebo and comes to learn the funhouse's dark secret in what story?

Answer: The Tale of Laughing in the Dark

One of the earliest episodes of the show, airing in 1992, "The Tale of Laughing in the Dark" was the first story told by Midnight Society member Betty Ann, who recounted the story of a boy, Josh, who shows up his friends by stealing the nose off the clown in the carnival funhouse. Once Zeebo's nose is stolen, however, Josh is stalked all the way home and scared into returning to the funhouse late at night to return the stolen item.

Aron Tager, who played Zeebo, was also featured on several episodes of the show as Dr. Vink (with a va-va-va!).
2. After playing a game at the mall, a young boy finds himself trapped, overnight, in the very game he spent too long attempting to beat in what story?

Answer: The Tale of the Pinball Wizard

The final episode of the 1992 season, "The Tale of the Pinball Wizard" was the second story told by Gary after the earlier "The Tale of the Super Specs". In this one, a young boy named Ross is persuaded against playing the 'Mystery Machine' in a mall backroom, but he defies the suggestion and ends up playing until the mall closes. What he finds, however, is that he's been teleported into the pinball machine, and the quest doesn't end when he beats the first level.
3. A unique showing of the classic film "Nosferatu" unexpectedly sets a vampire loose at a quiet movie theatre in which of these tales?

Answer: The Tale of the Midnight Madness

One of the earlier episodes of the 1993 season, "The Tale of the Midnight Madness" is a vampire story (told by Frank) brought to life in a movie theatre in which the nefarious Dr. Vink (yes, with a va-va-va!) drops off a special copy of "Nosferatu". When the reels are played on the silver screen, however, the workers at the theatre are beset upon by the real deal as Count Orlok emerges to feed. The only thing that can stop him is going into the film and finding the sunlight to destroy him.

Christopher Heyerdahl, who played Orlok, also featured in the TV show "Hell on Wheels" and in the "Twilight" film series.
4. A young teen moves to Sleepy Hollow on Halloween and comes face-to...well... he encounters the Headless Horseman. What's the story?

Answer: The Tale of the Midnight Ride

The first episode of the show's third season, airing in early 1994, "The Tale of the Midnight Ride" is a take on the classic tale of "Sleepy Hollow", and in this retelling (given by newcomer Midnight Society member, Tucker, who was Gary's little brother), a new student in Sleepy Hollow encounters both Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman after a Halloween dance, narrowly avoiding losing his own head.

Rachel Wilson, who played Katie in this episode, is also known for having appeared on the kids/teen YTV series "Breaker High" a few years after this episode aired.
5. In which of these stories does a young girl learn that her new neighbour has actually been dead for quite some time?

Answer: The Tale of Apartment 214

Recounted in season three (1994) by Kiki, this story is one of the more sentimental ones of the bunch, still touching on the horror elements that build up the series, but focusing on a ghost without nefarious motivations. As Stacey discovers, not long after moving into a new apartment with her mother, the kindly lady who lives down the hall in Apartment 214, Madeline, is actually a ghost.

They solve the ghost's loneliness issue by moving in.
6. Two young girls, both enemies, get lost together when they go for a hike near their camp in what campfire tale?

Answer: The Tale of Watcher's Woods

In this third season episode, another new member of the Midnight Society is added as Sam tells the story, and this one features two girls, Sarah and Kelly, who wander into Watcher's Woods, lose their way and stumble not only upon a trio of evil witches after nightfall, but the terrifying 'Watcher'. The girls have to overcome their fears to find their way home and defeat all the scary things along the way.

Jewel Staite, who played Kelly in this episode, went on to star in "Firefly" (and its film, "Serenity"), "Stargate Atlantis", and the AMC mystery show "The Killing".
7. The only two-part episode of the original series' run, which of these stories involved pirates brought into being through a magical spyglass?

Answer: The Tale of Cutter's Treasure

In a tale provided by both Gary and Frank, the two parts of "The Tale of Cutter's Treasure" (both found in the fourth season) featured not only Dr. Vink (again, with that va-va-va!), but the recurring character of Sardo. The latter character is the one who ends up giving away the haunted spyglass that Rush receives in an old pirate treasure chest. When he unwittingly brings back the ghost of Jonas Cutter, he has to save his brother, Max, from undead pirates.

This happened to be the final Dr. Vink episode in the series.
8. Two high schoolers discover a hidden pool behind a school locker, but quickly discover the reason it was hidden away in which tale?

Answer: The Tale of the Dead Man's Float

This first episode of the show's fifth season (the last of the original series, airing in late 1995) took place entirely in a high school where Zeke, a science nerd, discovered a swimming pool hidden behind a movable locker in one of the school hallways. When he and his friend, Clorice, start using the pool, however, they discover that a terrifying ghost lives in its depths, and it's up to his science abilities to stop it from escaping.

This is the first episode in which Stig tells a tale and joins the Midnight Society, replacing Frank, who departed at the end of season four (with "The Tale of Train Magic").
9. In this story, a hospital worker comes face-to-face with a vampire hunting down the living in the morgue. Which is it?

Answer: The Tale of the Night Shift

Although all of the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" stories pertained to horrors that were experienced by kids of different ages, none of this mattered for "The Tale of the Night Shift", about teens working overnight at the hospital despite their ages. In this one, Sam told the story of Amanda and Jack who, while spending time on the night shift, had to get to the bottom of a vampire problem while also saving their own necks. Only by cremating the vampire's coffin were they able to turn everyone back to normal.
10. A creature from Irish folklore can only be stopped with a magical song in which of these stories?

Answer: The Tale of Badge

The final episode of the original series, airing in 1996, "The Tale of Badge" was told by series mainstay Gary. In this one, a young girl came into her Irish heritage when she received gifts from her grandmother that would allow her to not only come into special talents, but to use them to keep an odd creature, known as Badge, at bay.

Following this episode, "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" went on hiatus for three years, returning with only one of its original cast members. After two seasons on Nickelodeon, it would be shelved, again, until 2019.
