Answer: exposure to smallpox

In the episode, Wojceihowicz arrested an ill suspect who collapsed and a doctor was summoned. The doctor was concerned that the suspect had either chicken pox or smallpox and ordered the whole building quarantined until they knew for sure what the illness was. It turned out it was a bad case of chicken pox.
4. What was something that personally irritated Wojceihowicz?

Answer: having his last name mispronounced

Wojceihowicz got very huffy over anyone mispronouncing his last name. It happened a number of times on the show. Comically he would say his name correctly, brandish his name plate, and say, 'It's pronounced just like it's spelled!' Amongst his colleagues, he was simply known as 'Wojo'.
5. In one episode, Detective Harris was the last officer required to go undercover as a woman. Why?

Answer: he had to shave his moustache

The character of Harris was a fastidious and vain man. He was proud of his moustache and absolutely didn't want to shave it. Harris even tried unsuccessfully to bribe his colleagues to take his shift. However, his coworkers all decided that he could go last.
6. All of the detectives are called by their last names with the exception of which one?

Answer: Chano Amengual

Chano was played by Gregory Sierra. He was usually an even keel sort, but could get flustered at times, and when he did, he would comically launch into a stream of Spanish. The character was written out of the show when Gregory Sierra got a role on another television series.
7. The character Nick Yemana, suffered from appendicitis on the show.

Answer: True

In the episode, 'Appendicitis', Nick complained of stomach pains and finally doubled over in pain. As they waited for the ambulance to arrive, they were told to lie Yemana on a flat surface. Barney tells Wojo to clear his desk for a makeshift bed, and the latter tips it to end to end, unceremoniously dumping all of the contents all over the floor.
8. What was different about the set design of the series?

Answer: it was filmed almost entirely in one location

Barney Miller was filmed primarily at the 12th precinct. There are a few episodes showing other places, such as the homes of some of the characters, a hotel, and a stakeout, but other than that, the squad room and Barney's office are where the action occurred.
9. Harris ended up writing a book. What was it called?

Answer: Blood on the Badge

Harris wanted to be a writer. During the series he penned his novel, 'Blood on the Badge', which mentioned experiences and characters that were from Harris' time at the 12th precinct. This resulted in a lawsuit by one of the people mentioned in the book.
10. Originally meaning to be a one-time character, which erudite and knowledgeable detective replaced the character, Chano?

Answer: Arthur Dietrich

Steve Landesberg played an underhanded priest for one episode. He was later recast as Detective Dietrich who was a recurring character in season 3 and a series regular in season 4. Dietrich was a fountain of information which could be irritating to the other officers at times.
