Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cave In To Hum Us Rye Lee
Answer: communications/engineer
Kevin Thomas Riley was played by Bryce Hyde and appeared in two episodes of the show: "The Naked Time" where he was an engineer and "The Conscience of the King" where he was a communications officer.
In "The Naked Time" Lieutenant Riley was infected by a disease that removes inhibitions.
While under that disease, he sang ""I'll Take You Home Kathleen" and locked himself in engineering. In "The Conscience of the King", it was revealed the Riley's family was murdered by Kodos the Executioner who killed half the colonists on the planet Tarsus IV in hopes the other half might survive.
As a result, Riley wanted revenge on Kodos.
2. Lend Hard Hoary Show Mack Coy
Answer: doctor
Leonard Horatio McCoy (played by DeForest Kelley) was the ship's doctor. He referred to himself a simple country doctor and preferred basic methods of treatment rather than the more advanced kinds. He also disliked using the transporter. His two most famous phrases were "He's dead, Jim" and "I'm a doctor, not a..." His nickname was Sawbones, or Bones for short, but it was usually only Captain Kirk who addressed him by his nickname.
His middle name, Horatio, was never revealed in the show but rather in the novels.
In the first aired pilot of the show, McCoy did not appear, and the role of the chief medical officer was Doctor Mark Piper, played by Paul Fix.
3. He Car Rue Sue Lieu
Answer: helmsman
Hikaru Sulu, played by George Takei, was the helmsman of the USS Enterprise. Sulu had an interest in botany and was even the ship's botanist in the first aired pilot of the show before taking his more familiar role as helmsman. In the movies, he continued as helmsman until "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" where he became captain of the USS Excelsior.
It was also in this movie where it was first revealed that Sulu's first name was Hikaru.
4. Mount Gum Aries Caught
Answer: chief engineer
Montgomery Scott, better known as Scotty, was played by James Doohan and was the chief engineer aboard the ship. In fact, the Enterprise was the first ship where he served as chief engineer. Unlike with McCoy, many people referred to him by his nickname.
He had a reputation as a miracle worker, which was helped by Scotty exaggerating the time he needed to accomplish a task, and then completing the task much faster than the time he gave.
5. Nigh Odor Who Who Raw
Answer: communications officer
Nyota Uhura (played by Nichelle Nichols) was the communications officer. Whenever somebody wanted a comm system open to another ship, it would be Uhura who would open it. Uhura's role as a prominent black person on a show made in a time in which blacks were usually in servant like roles made a huge impact on the viewing audience, including the astronaut Mae Jemison and the actress Whoopi Goldberg.
Uhura's first name was never revealed in the show, only in the "Star Trek" (2009) film where it was actually the first name of Uhura's counterpart from an alternate universe. That being said, it would also be the prime universe's Uhura's first name as well since the divergence in the timelines wouldn't have affected her name.
6. Groveling Dray of Hitch Chick Huff
Answer: navigator
Pavel Andreievich Chekov, played by Walter Koeing, was introduced in the second season. As the navigator aboard the Enterprise, it was his job to project a course for the ship. In later "Star Trek" series, this role would be combined with the helmsman. In the movies, Chekov would also take the role of a security officer. A recurring joke on the show was Chekov stating things were invented in Russia even if they weren't.
When Chekov first appeared in the show, he had a wig that made him resemble the Beatles. One theory is that Chekov was introduced to capitalize on the success of The Beatles.
His middle name was mentioned in "The Way to Eden" where Chekov met an old flame of his called Irina. When they met up, Irina referred to Chekov as Pavel Andreievich.
7. Gems Tis Berry Risk Irk
Answer: captain
James Tiberius Kirk, played (some may say overplayed) by William Shatner, was the captain of the Enterprise. Kirk was, at the time, the youngest captain in Starfleet. However, Kirk was not the first captain of the Enterprise; his predecessors were Robert April and Christopher Pike. His close friends onboard the Enterprise were First Officer Spock and Doctor Leonard McCoy.
8. Junk Aisle
Answer: transporter chief
John Kyle (played by John Winston) was the transporter chief. Little is known about him. In fact, his first name was only revealed in the novels, never in the show. Whereas a lot of crew members wearing red shirts were killed off, Kyle survived the series and even appeared in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan".
In "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds", it was revealed he served on the Shenzhou before being transferred to the Enterprise.
9. Criss Teen Chop Hill
Answer: nurse
Christine Chapel, played by Majel Barrett prior to her marriage to "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, was the nurse/assistant to Doctor McCoy. She would often show affection towards Spock, such as cooking him plomeek soup when Spock was experiencing the Vulcan mating ritual called pon farr.
This was despite knowing Spock would not show affection towards her, even by Vulcan standards.
10. Genesis Rant
Answer: yeoman
Janice Rand (played by Grace Lee Whitney) was the captain's yeoman during the first season of the show until behind the scenes problems caused her to leave the show. She did however appear in three "Star Trek" movies along with the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Flashback".
In "The Naked Time", Kirk mentioned that he had feelings for her, but he never acted on those feelings. Although in "The Enemy Within", a duplicate Kirk did have an unfortunate encounter where he assaulted Janice.
