Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A black crowned stag on a gold field would be the house sigil for which of the following, occupying the Iron Throne at the start of the series?

Answer: House Baratheon

House Baratheon is in a strong spot at the start of "Game of Thrones" with Robert I Baratheon seated on the Iron Throne, being the usurper who took down the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen. Other House Baratheon family members come and go throughout the series, key figures including Stannis Baratheon, later killed by Brienne of Tarth after the Battle of Winterfell, and Shireen, his daughter, who he burned at the stake, sacrificed to the Lord of Light in an attempt to help the House ascend once again.

By the end of the series, only Gendry may be heir to House Baratheon, but since he was never legitimately acknowledged as anything more than a bastard, the lineage at Storm's End theoretically came to an end.
2. This many-tentacled creature might be the closest real animal to the Greyjoy crest. What's actually featured on their coat of arms?

Answer: The Kraken

Elected to be the ruling house of the Iron Islands, House Greyjoy is represented by a golden kraken on a black crest. Much of their story involves characters attempting to reclaim ground in the political battles of the Seven Kingdoms, but after the death of Balon Greyjoy and the return of Euron, it's Yara Greyjoy who ends up retaking the spot at the head of the House, siding with Daenerys while her uncle makes the wrong choice in courting Cersei Lannister.

Theon Greyjoy, meanwhile, starts the series amongst the Starks and takes a meandering road to his complete undoing over the course of the show, eventually ending up at Bran's side in Winterfell and falling to the Night King.
3. Though they ruled the Westerlands, did the Lannisters' coat of arms, that of a lion, ever fly over King's Landing?

Answer: Yes

After Robert Baratheon's death at the end of the show's first season, Joffrey ends up the heir to the Iron Throne, and while this seems to be a win for House Baratheon, few are aware that Joffrey is actually a product of incest between former queen Cersei and her brother, Jaime. By the end of the series, the only Lannister left alive was Tyrion, who many wrote off for his dwarfism, but who also managed to maneuver the workings of the Seven Kingdoms and stay alive long enough to outlast the others. The House Lannister banner bears a golden lion on a crimson field.

While the Baratheon colours would have followed both Joffrey and his brother, Tommen, to the Iron Throne, they were succeeded by their mother, Cersei, after their untimely deaths.
4. House Mormont is represented, on their house sigil, by a black bear. From which region do they hail?

Answer: The North

House Mormont is a lesser house in the North, being overseen by House Stark for the run of the series, though two of its main members, Ser Jorah Mormont, who falls in and out of favour with Daenerys, and Lyanna Mormont, the young lady who leads Bear Island in his absence, are featured quite prominently. Both Jorah and Lyanna meet their end in Winterfell when facing the White Walkers and the Night King, and with their deaths ends the lineage of House Mormont.
5. The dire wolf belongs to House Stark both on their crests and in their lives. What three-word slogan typically accompanies their banner?

Answer: Winter is Coming

The northernmost of the houses of the Seven Kingdoms, House Stark is one of the key players in "Game of Thrones" as the actions that unfold in Winterfell at the start of the story are a catalyst for everything to follow. By the end of the series, only a handful of the Stark children (including Jon Snow, Ned Stark's bastard child) are left alive though they are all forever changed by the political game played across their lives.

At the start of the series, the Stark children come across a number of dire wolves which are adopted by each of them.

The only wolves to survive the series are Ghost, belonging to Jon, and presumably Nymeria, belonging to Arya, who is set free at the end of season one and returns, briefly, in season seven as the leader of her own pack.
6. The sigil of House Arryn is a white falcon in flight alongside a crescent moon. Who, of these characters, would technically fall under this banner?

Answer: Petyr Baelish

Though originally a part of House Baelish, Petyr Baelish (also known as Littlefinger), spends most of the early seasons of the show in King's Landing acting as an advisor to the Iron Throne. He's sent to The Eyrie on the request of Tywin Lannister, hand of the then-King (Joffrey), to wed Lysa Arryn and pledge the house in support of King's Landing.

His effort succeeds, though there is bloodshed, and it all results in Littlefinger becoming Lord Protector of the Vale. It's the ideal position for Sansa Stark to exploit-- she uses the knights of the Vale to help turn the tides at the Battle of the Bastards, keep Stark in power in Winterfell, and eventually help her siblings kill Lord Baelish at long last.
7. How many heads should be on the dragon featured on the crest of House Targaryen?

Answer: Three

The former possessors of the Iron Throne before the Mad King Aerys II was overthrown by Robert Baratheon, the end of House Targaryen's reign left its lineage in exile, and it is under this circumstance that Daenerys and her brother, Viserys, wander the further reaches of the Seven Kingdoms rebuilding their reputation, along the way receiving three dragon eggs that she manages to hatch.

The entirety of "Game of Thrones" follows her quest to return the Targaryen name to the throne though she only makes it to King's Landing at the end of the series whereupon she's killed by her nephew, Jon Snow, and her body is whisked away by her dragon, Drogon.

The Iron Throne is melted down in his fiery breath with Daenerys having been the last to lay her hand on it.
8. House Tyrell is one of the few houses in the Seven Kingdoms not to feature an animal on its crest. Instead, it features a red rose.

Answer: False

House Tyrell of Highgarden actually features a golden rose on their crest, and it's with this in mind that Lady Olenna Tyrell's nickname as the Queen of Thorns makes more sense-- besides her shrewd political sense she exhibits a biting wit. The Tyrells manage to weave their way into the key political spots of the Seven Kingdoms with only a few family members with Margaery Tyrell marrying not only Joffrey, but Tommen in an effort to get closer to the throne (and Renly Baratheon when he had a claim to it).

She perishes in the explosion at the Sept of Baelor leaving only Olenna to carry the family's name though she, too, dies drinking poison in Jaime Lannister's siege of Highgarden.
9. Hailing from Dorne, House Martell would also feature which of these on its banner?

Answer: A spear

Not by coincidence, the home of House Martell is also in Castle Sunspear; it's from there that they travel to King's Landing in season four, arriving in time for Joffrey's wedding to Margaery Tyrell. Unfortunately, it's a time of tumult in the city as Joffrey's death leads to Oberyn Martell's (at the hands of Gregor Clegane).

It leads Oberyn's wife, Ellaria, to seek her own vengeance against the Lannisters alongside a number of Oberyn's illegitimate daughters, nicknamed 'The Sand Snakes'. Since there is no male heir, however, it means the end of the Martell lineage.
10. Which of these people has relations to the Riverlands house bearing a fish on its crest?

Answer: Catelyn Stark

It's the Riverlands that House Tully makes their home and it's Catelyn Stark who originally hailed from Riverrun as the daughter of Hoster Tully (and brother of Edmure Tully). Though she married Ned Stark and moved to Winterfell, her ties to the Riverlands are what allow her and Robb to leverage them in battles throughout the first several seasons of the show however their actions ultimately lead to a betrayal at The Twins when, at a wedding, Walder Frey kills them and the key figures of their army.

It fractures the Starks further, killing the house's eldest members while leading Winterfell into uncertain times. Edmure Tully survives the coming war and is reinstated at Riverrun by the show's end.
