Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sons of the Harpy
Answer: Golden mask
The Sons of the Harpy are a "Game of Thrones" terrorist underground group seeking to take down the conquering Queen of Meereen, Daenerys Targaryen. They conceal their faces behind a golden mask resembling a harpy, the heraldic symbol of the masters of slaves.
In 2015, seasons 4 and 5, Targaryen takes their city and frees their slaves The Sons of the Harpy make her pay a price. Emilia Clarke plays Daenerys Targaryen.
2. Castle at Riverlands pass
Answer: The Golden Tooth
This strong castle, the Golden Tooth, guards the mountain pass between the Westerlands and the Riverlands in Westeros. It is just off the River Road and is pledged to the Lannisters. As punishment for Catelyn (Tully) Stark's abduction of Tyrion Lannister, his father Tywin orders Ser Jaime Lannister to attack the House of Tully and the Riverlands.
The Riverlands forces gather at the Battle of the Golden Tooth, but are smashed by Jaime's 30,000 troops. Thus began the dread "War of the Five Kings". Michelle Fairley plays Catelyn Stark.
3. Sellswords
Answer: Golden Company
In "Game of Thrones" Sellswords are experienced fighting men who "sell their swords". They are sworn to no one and fight in combat for whomever pays them the most. As such they are notoriously unreliable. The Golden Company however is made up of 10-20,000 such men, who have a code of honor. "Our word is gold", is the Company's motto.
They carry a gold banner and cry at battle, "Beneath the gold, the bitter steel!" As a disgraced knight, Jorah Mormont joined the Golden Company. Keep an eye on them: Thousands of adept and undefeated "soldiers of fortune" may sway a war. Jorah Mormont is played by the Scottish actor Iain Glen.
4. Casterly Rock fortune
Answer: Gold mines
Casterly Rock is the seat of the House of Lannister, a great castle carved within a massive hill overlooking the sea. Deep inside "The Rock" are dungeons, prison cells, cages for lions, stables and a great many gold mines. The gold has been mined for thousands of years, and gave the Lannisters their legendary wealth. There are rumors the mines are dry, but others say many veins of gold have yet to be harvested.
5. City Watch
Answer: Gold Cloaks
Gold Cloaks, formally called the City Watch, are the law enforcement guards serving the King or Queen, composed of men of any rank and birth. Like Sellswords they work for salary. Unlike Sellswords many of them have little battle experience. They are a security patrol, wearing cloaks colored gold. As the Starks experienced at King's Landing, often the Gold Cloaks have coarse manners and are absent honor. As seen at the Battle of the Blackwater, they are as likely to flee as fight. Still they have considerable bully power extended by the royals.
6. Jaimie Lannister gets one
Answer: Gold hand
In "Game of Thrones" season 3, the Kingslayer Ser Jaime Lannister is captured along with Brienne of Tarth. Lannister infuriates his captor Locke by attempting to bribe him, so Locke chops off Jaime's right hand--a hand essential to so great a swordsman. Once home a hand made of gold is attached, and Jaime surprises his father by remaining Commander of the "White Cloaks", the King's Guard, an elite guard who wear white cloaks and gold armor.
After some prodding from the Sellsword Bronn, Jaime regains a will to live and discovers his gold hand has advantages.
There is a tantalizing prophecy that a flaming hand of gold signals the "Prince That Was Promised", who will rise up and defeat the White Walkers. Hmmmm....Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of Denmark plays Jaime Lannister.
7. Seven Kingdoms currency
Answer: Gold Dragons
In the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros the currency is based on the Gold Dragon. Common folk use copper penny coins, half-pennies and the like. Among the "ironborn" men do not pay the "gold price" that is, pay for anything with Gold Dragons. They pay the "iron price", taking what they want from the dead they slay.
In season 1 the Iron Throne is about six million Gold Dragons in debt to the powerful Iron Bank of Braavos. Some calculate that's about $70 billion US dollars. Gold Dragons bear the name and likeness of the ruling King at time of mint, and a three-headed dragon on the back, from the days of King Aegon the Dragon.
8. Viserys Targaryen dies by
Answer: Molten gold
The spoiled and unstable Viserys Targaryen felt he should sit on the Iron Throne. He sells his sister to the fierce Dothraki, but when he threatens her unborn child and violates sacred laws, Viserys is given a crown in season 1, "The Golden Crown". Drogo, warlord of the Dothraki, pours molten gold over the head of Viserys. His sister has no sympathy, saying if he were a true dragon, a true Targaryen, no fire could kill him. Harry Lloyd plays Viserys.
In the real Roman world centuries ago it was a preferred means of death for those of high status to have molten gold poured down their throats. Rather than be flayed alive, for instance.
9. Joffrey Baratheon has this
Answer: Golden hair
Axel Baratheon: black of hair. Lionel Baratheon: black of hair. Joffrey Baratheon: golden headed. Suspicions are raised when the official "Lineage and Histories" book of the Great Houses makes it clear the ancestors of King Robert Baratheon have always had dark hair. Yet his eldest son Joffrey, the assumed legitimate heir, has hair of gold.
This discovery will bring down a King, his Hand and a Lord, setting the "Game of Thrones" in motion. Jack Gleeson plays Joffrey.
10. House Lannister sigil
Answer: Golden lion
House Lannister seated in Casterly Rock is a Great House of the Seven Kingdoms, both wealthy and powerful. A golden lion on a crimson field is their sigil. Their official motto is "Hear me roar!" although "A Lannister always pays his debts" is spoken far more often. Usually as a promise put forth to manipulate.
