Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Like many early television programmes, "Green Acres" evolved from an old radio show called "Granby's Green Acres" which was broadcast briefly in 1950. Both the radio show and the television show were created, written, and produced by Jay Sommers. The television show "Green Acres" ran for six seasons, from 1965 to 1971.
The main characters were Oliver Wendell Holmes (played by Eddie Albert) and his wife Lisa (played by Eva Gabor). The show's premise was that Oliver, a wealthy city lawyer, desires to become a farmer and moves himself and his wife to a ramshackle farmhouse in Hooterville. Lisa has no wish to leave her life of luxury in New York for such a venture but goes along with it. As it turns out, Oliver is quite inept at farming and is constantly being taken advantage of by the locals. Lisa is unaccustomed to performing even the simplest household tasks. Her attempts to tackle chores such as cooking and ironing usually have disastrous results.
Part of the comedy is that local residents of Hooterville are quite eccentric and Lisa fits right into the community because she accepts them as they are, whereas Oliver struggles to cope with their lack of conventionality. The situations Oliver finds himself in are quite absurd but Lisa appears completely oblivious to the absurdity.
"Green Acres" was one of a trio of related shows produced by the corporation Filmways (remember Eva Gabor signing off the show with "This has been a Filmways presentation darling"?). The other two shows were "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "Petticoat Junction" and characters from these shows sometimes "crossed over" and appeared in "Green Acres".
